Hey all.  As a long time player of BF2 I've always wanted to one day run my own server.  I've been in clans and played on clan servers before but I have never had admin rights and I'm dying to be in control of a server, atleast for a few months to see how I like it.  I know that BF2 is perhaps not quite as popular as some of the newer games out/coming out but I don't believe for a second that it is dead or near dying based on the many, many hardcore players out there and the many servers that are full on a daily basis.

So, I was wondering if anyone could plz recommend to me a good company to rent a ranked server through.  I've looked at a few different companies and some are alot more $$ than others.  Since I'd be the only one paying for it and I certainly don't have a ton of money, I was thinking of a 32 man server that was ranked and probably skip all the options (atleast at first) like voip etc.  How cheap can i get a 32 man server for, anyone know?

Im aware that the main issue would be getting enough players onto the server to justify running it.  I also know that most players have a select grp of 3 or 4 servers that they exclusively play on (myself included)  and that most successful servers tend to by 24/7 (insert map name here) servers.

I've been thinking of starting up either a Euro force server or a SF server... though perhaps an all air or all (whatever) server.  Nothing is for sure clearly so I am just wondering if anyone can price a good company to go through or has experience/recommendations on this sort of thing. Thanks

Do a Special Forces all maps server. So many SF servers only run one map so if you can start up one that runs all the maps it will be unstoppable.

If you're interested in an ALL Special Forces map server, type in '=PL=' in server search. Yesterday, it had enough people to play, and I got to try Night Flight online for the first time.

an air maps server might attract m95'ers and C4 who want to fly.. which is cool if you like it but you rarely get a plane in the air lol

32 SF all maps would be awesome

remember to do 'my server name (not other popular server) (not another popular server)  so you catch more peps

As I expected most ppl will throw into the discussion their personal thoughts on the best map(s) to run.  As I stated before, this is merely something I'd like to do, depending on cost mostly, not something that is for sure.  Im looking for advice on server providers and their costs more than what maps to run.  anyone that runs a server now or in the past that knows of good companies or bad ones to stay away from would be great to hear from.  Im looking for the cheapest way to get a 32 man up and running.  The maps/type of server will be decided after that.  Also, since BF2 is over 2 years old, why are the costs of ranked servers still so high?  I guess its just supply and demand.  No reason to lower the price if the competition doesn't and the public is still willing to pay.  But it seems to me that the prices should be alot lower....  anyways..

Thanks

UK servers - Rackage are the best (from my experience) Had no problems with our wake server and it was up for over a year.

We experimented a lot with map rotation etc etc. 24/7 is the way to go. You'll need 3 or 4 guys to stay on the server to start with(get it populated)

32slot karkand io would work, we had ours on Wake, 64 player. It was very popular

Hope this helps

SF Rebel maps. High demand, low supply. The Iron Gator and night maps are rather underplayed as well, but the night ones dont have the "grab" that the other maps do.

24/7 is a great way to get things going too. Many people don't like loading, and these kinds of servers attract them.

If you make a Warlord/Ghost Town/Wake/Kark server, or any other abused map (imo), what makes your server more attractive than any of the others?

Also keep in mind what kind of awards you can get on your map. You might have a hard time believing it, but many players will pick a map on what awards they can get while playing it, be it ribbons, badges or medals.

Hope things work out for ya
