Saw this movie on a weblog today, I thought it was creepy and interesting at the same time.

creepy! Don't know what language it is..

I've looked up some information about these parasites, Check >>THIS<< movie: They produce hormones so they can control their host! They make the host suicide so they can leave the body to mate and reproduce. Just like some sort of alien

And some additional information:

wikipedia wrote:

Nematomorpha (sometimes called Gordiacea, and commonly known as Horsehair worms or Gordian worms) are a phylum of parasitic animals which are morphologically and ecologically similar to nematode worms, hence the name. They are, on average, 1 meter long, and 1 to 3 millimetres in diameter. Horsehair worms can be discovered in damp areas such as watering troughs, streams, puddles, and cisterns. The adult worms are free living, but the larvae are parasitic on beetles, cockroaches, grasshoppers and crustaceans. About 320 species have been described.

Nematomorphs possess an external cuticle without cilia. Internally, they have only longitudinal muscle and a non-functional gut, with no excretory, respiratory or circulatory systems. Reproductively, they are dioecious, with the internal fertilization of eggs that are then laid in gelatinous strings.

In Spinochordodes tellinii, which has grasshoppers as its vector, the infection acts on the grasshopper's brain and causes it to seek water and drown itself, thus returning the nematomorph to water. They are also remarkably able to survive the predation of their host, being able to wriggle out of the predator which has eaten the host cricket.

Relationships within the phylum are still somewhat unclear, but two classes are recognised:

    * Class Nectonematoida: Marine, planktonic, with a double row of natotory setae along each side of the body; with dorsal and ventral longitudinal epidermal cords, blastocoelom spacious and fluid filled; gonads single; larvae parasitise decapod crustaceans
    * Class Gordioidea: Freshwater and semiterrestrial; lack lateral rows of setae; with a single, ventral epidermal cord; blastocoelom filled with mesenchyme in young animals but becomes spacious in older individuals; larvae parasitise grasshoppers and crickets

That's intense. Nice find, I love this stuff.

Worms are bad news. Just the thought of them makes me shudder.

Didn't you hate 4chan and internet culture?

On topic, those things are creepy. They look like something from a bad 90's sci-fi movie. *Shutters*
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I rememeber watching a video where a cockroach kills itself in water and then a meter long worm comes out of it.

"kill it with fire" has been the standard response for anything bug-like and creepy for years and years, not limited to the internet, let alone your beloved 4chan.

Jesus, I HATE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER! Piece of shit player! It lets me see the first 10 seconds, as soon as they start talking, the sound lags to shit, and I get about one frame every two seconds! And the CPU isn't even at 100! Even if I let it buffer for TWO FUCKING MINUTES it won't work!

BAH!

Here's one of a frog that ate a cricket that had the parasite... Notice how the frog reacts when the worm starts coming out his mouth..

In short, the frog is all like- GTFO!!1  He has no interest in eating the worm, he starts trying to pull that nasty fucker out of his mouth..
and I may be crazy, but that frog looks freaked out by the whole thing.

It makes me wonder if humans have ever been infected- and what they would do when they started getting "taken over"

edit= It seems they are not harmful to humans or pets.. but how can that be?  Maybe they can't survive inside mammals, yet....

I would have definately ripped something out of the wall and dropped it on that son of a bitch, that shit made my skin crawl.

After dropping this rediculiously heavy object on it, I would probably lift the object, set the remains of that shit on fire, and then set the thing I dropped on it on fire, and then throw it in the street, hose said object down, and set it on fire again.

Horsehair worms are completely harmless. They do not infest people, livestock, pets or plants. They are beneficial because of the small percentage of crickets, and other insects that they kill. No control measures are needed when this interesting worm is found.

There also is a very long species of nematode, Mermis nigrescens which is a parasite of grasshoppers. The large adult nematodes, 4 to 8 inches in length, overwinter in the soil and under sheltering debris, emerging in late spring during periods of overcast, humid weather. At that time they may be seen crawling about plants as they lay eggs. Grasshoppers that ingest these eggs become infected as the nematodes develop internally. By late summer, it is not uncommon to find the abdomen of many grasshoppers to be packed with these parasites. Such infections seriously stress and sterilize infected grasshoppers.
