I just reformatted and i wanted to spice things up and try something different.

So i downloaded the Opera browser.
I've only had a few minutes of time with it already and all i can say right now is HOLY SHIT its fast!
Especially when loading pages and going back pages, its instant.

I would tell anyone its worth a try.

Though i havent decided im gunna use it yet. I dont like the tabs thing, i would prefer new windows.

Hmmmm
I'll update my review as i continue use.

www.opera.com

Edit 1: It's got this awesome feature where you cant click ads accidently. You have to click it once and then it becomes clickable. Perfect blend of protection from accidental ad clicking, and ease of use when you want to click the ad.

Woah, slow down. I don't think I'm ready to step that far yet. It sounds like quite a commitment.

Just kidding, yeah I've heard great things about opera, I will give it a try.

First, go here right now and get a decent skin, and spend ten minutes customising the UI. It makes a world of difference, as the standard skin and layout are a little, well, bland. Also, M2 wins, so don't forget to try it out.

Better or worse than Firefox?

That's a question of religion. If you don't use Firefox extensions, Opera technically has more going for it than Firefox, but it's completely up to the user.

Was wondering that too, are you just crazy in the head?  Tabs are the single best improvment in any web browser in years imo.

I've got Opera but sadly, even after a few uninstalls/reinstalls it crashes every few minutes.

I love it though Wish the farkin thing would work.

Firefox does everything well, however Opera is faster and has more features- but I find that the features in Opera are not as "complete" as Firefox-

take SpeedDial for example- one of the best things in Opera- there is no simple way of setting it as your homepage, you have to add this, change this, etc, before you can do it- and how hard can setting the search bar in your Speed Dial be? fcking complicated for Opera!

The features firefox has are complete and useful, Opera has better stuff, but doesn't do it as well- so they both kind of even it out. Firefox is more expandable and customisable than Opera, but Opera is faster.

They are both similar- but the only reason I use Opera is for the inbuilt IRC- I know firefox has chatzilla, but its a separate app nearly- IRC in opera is just a tab.
I use Opera. and will continue to use opera.

Some great features that I love about Opera....
  • SpeedDial
  • Ability to be able to restore tabs you close accidently, easily- and all the history and stuff for that tab is all saved.
  • Inbuilt IRC client
  • Customisable
  • Magic Wand- Stores entered usernames and password, and fills them in automatically with "CTRL + Return"
  • Save complete sessions- you have 20 tabs open, and need to close opera down, save the session, and return later to exactly how it was
  • Speed!
  • Builtin torrent client
  • Builtin Download Manager

Opera + OpenDNS = Insane speeds.

well one remark: if you reformat after a year, everything seems fast anyway.

I still prefer FF over Opera because it's more stable (at least on my computer) and I use a lot of add-ons. I would still suggest opera over IE though but that's no surprise.

Opera isn't bad, but it isn't perfect either. I still prefer Firefox, mostly because I know my way around it and I have all the extensions etc I need.

Now for the list Titch loves about Opera, I just couldn't not comment Quick comparison to Firefox:

#  SpeedDial
Bookmark aliases?
# Ability to be able to restore tabs you close accidently, easily- and all the history and stuff for that tab is all saved.
History > Recently Closed Tabs
# Inbuilt IRC client
Extension
# Customisable
Open-source, you can do everything you bloody well want. Not to mention XUL.
# Magic Wand- Stores entered usernames and password, and fills them in automatically with "CTRL + Return"
Check
# Save complete sessions- you have 20 tabs open, and need to close opera down, save the session, and return later to exactly how it was
Check
# Speed!
I never got such super-speeds in Opera really. I'd put that up as hardly noticeable.
# Builtin torrent client
Don't see why you'd need it, torrents are annoying and bandwidth-hogging pieces of crap anyway.
# Builtin Download Manager
DownThemAll extension.

Firefox has the features, but it has a huge memory bloat to match it. Also, if you don't notice the speed boost, there's something wrong.

FF3 will seriously decrease memory bloat. I've seen the tests somewhere, and it used up about as much memory with 25 tabs open than FF2 with 2 tabs open.

And the 'speed boost' is an odd thing in Opera. The page gets fully loaded, then parsed, then displayed. This gives you the idea it's faster, because you won't see any half pages. You'll just see a blank page while it's loading.

IE does this too
I hate it, it also does that for embedded Youtube videos, flash apps, and such. Pisses me off, you think you've pressed play and you go make a cup of tea and wait for it to load, only to come back to finding that you've not pressed it at all.

But I've heard good things about Opera before, too, and if I changed to Flock from Firefox then I can change to Opera
(The only reason I changed back to FF was because Flock deleted some of its own files...)

The superlative speed of Opera is pretty widely documented

Opera is more secure than Firefox. Firefox has currently 2 security holes and Opera has none.

As for the rest, basically, Opera had the ideas and Firefox copied them. I guarantee you that FF3 will have something along the lines of SpeedDial and a Torrent Downloader.

FF is just a large copy of all the good ideas on web browsers out there.

Not even Opera can cure my 512kbits...
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I like what Opera has done for WinMo....

You basically request a page like you would in IE and Opera sends the request to a master server that compresses pictures and data to reduce filesize (And thereby the cost of surfing) making a small and mobilescreen freindly weppage that you can browse around like on a normal PC...

This is genius but i can't help but wonder, did they implement some sort of spying in this ?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah. Hah.
Has it ever occured to you that, because Firefox is open-source and Opera isn't, more security holes will be found in Firefox? Because that's how it is.

Yeah, Firefox is open source, but that's really an excuse that doesn't change the bottom line.

Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Open windows instead of tabs.

I can't see why use windows instead of tabs though. Get used to tabs, and you won't ever use new windows again..

I do not know about good systems, but on my old rig Opera is really much much faster than FF. There is no doubt.

Adding Speed Dial as homepage: Well, set it to continue from last time, and close all tabs before exiting. It is alway easy to open a new tab though, as doing that opens the speed dial.

Changing the search box: Open new tab and put "about:config" or opera:config" into the address bar and enter. Search for speed dial. Put the value 0 in the "Speed Dial Search Type" for google.
