Modern Day Rockstar vs. Veterans

I recently read an interesting article in the Guardian which I cannot actually find right now but still...

It showed the differences between the old rockers like Led Zepp, Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc and the new fags (I'm sorry, I have to) like Amy Whinehouse, Keane (not rock but let's just use them as an example), etc.

It argued how the old Veterans (it specifically used Led Zepp) would perform over 200 nights in a year and still provide excellent entertainment vs Keane who's lead singer had to cancel a tour because he was "stressed".
Or take Deep Purple who would rock it out with quality shows almost every night of the year, party their dicks off and are considered legends today. This band vs Amy Whinehouse, who's so doped up on drugs she can't even make it to her concerts, shows the difference between the legends and the modern day fag.

I guess one argument against this is that so many band members of, for example The Who, died because of their wicked ways....but what do you think?

They are good bands (except for Linkin Park).

imo, RHCP and FF play like veterans... They're just new...

All the bands I seem to like have a member or the whole band either dead or not talking to each other or gone off to do really deep and spiritual side projects that no one listens to cos they are SHITE.

i think alot of that has to do with the preformers of the 60's and 70's. It seems that they actually CARED about music and their audience, where as most bands today are in it for the money. And yeah, todays bands will never come anywhere near being as great as zeppelin was.

I'm one of the biggest classic rock fans ever, and I agree....for the most part. Some other bands are AMAZING live, and give it 110% each and every concerts. My two favorite Modern Rock bands are the Foo Fighters and the Queens of the Stone Age. Josh Homme (QotSA) and Dave Grohl (FF) each are INCREDIBLE up close and really make you feel like they're playing a concert just for you. It's amazing.

IMO The music companies have a strangle hold on quality, talented personalities. Instead they rather shove down imagery, of untalented pop princesses to emo-whining fags, to tweens and such. Nowaday, some musicians set the bar so low it is to be expected.....thank you Axel Rose, you biotch!

Slightly off topic: Johnny Rotten (sex pistols) going off on Guitar Hero or whatever and shite starts rolling from there.

That's okay... Foo Fighters rule. Their double album from a year or three ago is still the most played in my entire ipod. I love all their albums and the new one has really grown on me. And though the music is way different, I'll always love them due to Dave's ties to Nirvana.

RHCP isn't a favorite of mine but I've been listening to them for like 15+ years now or something.

RAtM isn't my thing as their stuff all sounds the same to me now, but when I was younger and always pissed at the world they were the greatest band ever... "F YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME".

Your taste for Linkin Park is easily offset by the other good bands you listed, so no fag title for you! No worries.

And for what it's worth, I imagine that all of them party like rock stars. And I imagine that all of them have played drunk and/or stoned at one time or another.

In regards to tour schedules, I think these folks don't tour like they used to because they don't have to. Used to be tours were where they got most of their income but that's not so any more. They make better money off album sales due to higher volumes and they also make money elsewhere with promotional deals, endorsements and paraphernalia sales (branded T-shirts, etc). None of those things were as lucrative as they are now, so they went to the only cash machine they had available, their concerts. If they needed more money they could always tour more.

Yeah but they have all (except for RHCP & RATM) changed their style in their latest releases, i liked both their older and newer work

Audioslave (roots in RATM) are good too

But DAMN i hate most of this Indie thing going on atm

You can say that again. One of the reasons the Foo Fighters are so great is that they have the balls to change their musical style and the talent to pull it off. There are very few bands with the skill to pull that off. All of my favorite artists from Pink Floyd to Miles Davis have had one thing in common - they write what they feel and as they grow and mature, so does their music. It's a rare thing to find a band these days that does that. I think the Foo Fighters are one of those rare finds.

I also think that's why you don't see many bands that last over 10 years now... They're mostly pop crap consumed as a fad and then traded in for the next great thing. That's what happens when people do music for money. When they do it because it's a passion (and they're good at it), that's when people really take notice and will follow them for their entire careers. Because while most music buyers buy what they hear on the radio, some of us buy music because we're interested in what the musician has to say this time, not knowing if it'll be more of the same or a completely new experience. The last two albums from Foo Fighters have been awesome surprises for me.

Just no. If you can honestly say that you like silverchair for any of their albums past Frogstomp then you fail at life.
It is a bit unfortunate that they peaked at age 16 but after that all the angst was gone. Freakshow wasn't horrible but it still pailed in comparison. I'm just waiting for Daniel Johns to be caught in a public toilet with another man *wink wink*. Otherwise the list is fine.

As far as the "veterans" performing more, their performances were a lot more subdued then current concerts. Or at least in the early days as can be seen in many of their video clips. The audience is all sitting down and most if not all of the entertainment is drawn from the music and not the stage show. Compare that to say Rammstein who have massive stage shows or Dragonforce who are extremely energetic and somewhat insane on stage.

That said i would imagine that the after parties would have been far more intense what with the level of drug taking and alcohol intake.

But there are still bands out there slogging it hard and performing almost constantly they juat aren't in the mainstream anymore. A lot of the metal bands just won't get the sort of publicity they need without constantly touring and attracting new audiences.

Just my thoughts.
