cloning...is it against nature to do so? will god smite us all for it? who knows

i for one think it's a good idea, aslong as it can help us fight diseases and the like, or is this just a way of pet shops to make money??

And in response to the ethics of cloning.... I think cloning is alright, except when it comes to humans. But our technology is growing and we could definitely use cloning to our advantage. This isn't evil science or anything. What if we cloned cows, pigs, fish, and eventually got it down to a simple and quick method. Wouldn't that be great to end world hunger??? And then we can clone cheetahs and force them to run on treadmills all day to generate electricity!

This concept of God and strictly obeying every rule ever is seriously outdated. I'm sure back in the old days Edison was accused of being the devil and that electricity and man-made light were Satan's work.

This is just another phase. People will keep complaining and whining, but once we get the kinks sorted out, people will praise it like no other. Besides, Darwinism ftw. Once we find the cure for one disease or cancer, nature will create another. That's just how it goes.

I am not against cloning animals. Their genetic structure is simpler than ours, so cloning is less likely to lead to problems with the gene pool, diseases, etc..

With humans, however, I'd be against any form of cloning. I think it is important that every human born is unique. Stem cell research, yes, maybe even organ farming from stem cells ( there are thousands of people on waiting lists for organ transplants, but only few organs available ), but cloning, no.

EDIT: after some thought, I'd probably want to exclude great apes ( any ape from the hominidae family ) from cloning, too. Their genetic structure is so close to ours ( 97% ), I don't think it would be a good idea.
I know that because of that likeness, an argument could be made that great apes are perfect for simulating the effects of human cloning, and would help tremendously with stem cell research, but I don't think it's right to do s.th. like that to apes, sorry.

Even though I'm against human cloning, I'd still like to see it done just once, just to see what would happen. Would the person behave exactly the same? How would they change depending on their upbringing? Will they develop the same problems the original person has, same habits, will everything really be exactly the same? It's definitely very dangerous though.

^ And I agree about the apes. We just ought to stick with regular, dumb, run-of-the-mill animals.

I seriously hope we can get cloning to succeed and get things going. It'd be great to "grow" living food just like we do with plants, vegetables, fruits, etc. Plus you know they'd start cloning extinct animals, then we can all have bald eagles as our pets! (But those animals will become extinct soon enough, they couldn't cut it in the first place; like I said earlier, Darwinism FTW.)

@mtb0minime: I don't see how cloning will end world hunger, you'll still have to feed the animal for it to grow.

I for one think cloning should be done, although they need to keep a strict set of rules because it's amazingly easy to clone and easy to make something that could kill many others.
I study pharmacy, and in about 2 hours I made a bacteria immune to an antibiotic (it was a friendly bacteria that lives in your guts ^^). It's easy to make something quite deadly by accident.
Thus I think cloning should only be done for greater benefits for everyone, not to make a glowing animal to sell just so that you can be a millionaire.

ironically, that same argument could be used against human cloning. With the kind of state our planet is in, we simply cannot afford to create more mouths to feed. What would you do with all these clones anyway ? I mean, they'd be real people, with feelings, and - more importantly - rights. This would create all sorts of ethical and legal problems.

The Nazis didn't have cloning, but they used jews, gypsies and other non-arians to conduct terrible experiments with, and I don't think we want to get back to that.

Cloning animals could help cure hunger by way of cloning individual animals which produce high amounts of food/other product for a comparatively low amount of feedstock, maybe the animals being cloned will have good disease resistence etc. I think more research needs to be done, however.
