I can't get my microphone to work with Ventrillo, OR Teamspeak. Whenever I test to see if it works in the options, it either doesn't even register my keyclicks (both programs), or it will lag ALOT and then not respond (ventrillo). Any help?
I have a 2.8 ghz dual core and 2gb of RAM, I also recently reformatted. 7600 GS.
Thanks..

Im running windows XP. If I update my sound card driver, how would I do that? Microsoft downloads or elsewhere?

Better yet, how do I check what it even is?

Well I don't remember much from XP, but you have to right click on "my computer", Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Then there should be something to do with sound on that list.

Out from that you can find out what type of soundcard you have.

Also, you have tryed to uninstall both programs, restart computer and then install them again?

try recording your voice in windows sound recorder.  also check all of your settings under Control panel -> sounds and audio devices to make sure that your mic is the selected recording device.  i've had this happen to me several times and i always fix it in the control panel settings.

When you reformatted, did you reinstall by an actual windows cd or by a restore cd given by your pc manufacturer? Either way, try and update your motherboard drivers (if its onboard sound). First, go to add new hardware and have it search for new hardware that has not been installed. See if any sound related drivers pop up and install them.

If you've got an internal sound card, check the mobo mamnufacturer's website. If you've got an external (PCI) sound card, check the box you got it in. If you've got an OEM computer, check the OEM website, and/or download appropriate driver from there.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

1) Right click on my computer
2) click manage
3) device management (something like that)

Check here, is there any yellow exclamation mark?

--------------------------------------

1) Go to control panel-> sound something something (sorry, don't know the exact english terms, sound and audio devices or something like that)
2) at the speech tab you can check on your hardware
3) In the volume tab, press advanced (volume)
-a) you might have to press options-> properties here first and click microphone). Click ok.
4) check microphone, is it muted? if so, uncheck

-----------------------------------------

Last thing I can remember right now, does the mic work on another computer?

You probably don't have the input set to microphone.  If you don't see the little speaker icon in the task tray then go to the control panel and choose sound and audio devices.  On the very first tab make sure the check box for show icon is actually checked.  Look at the other tabs and make sure your sound card is installed and being used as the primary device.  Close out of the sound and audio devices applet.

Then double click the icon when it is in the task tray.  Go to the menu and choose options, properties.  Set the adjust volume for to recording.  Click OK and the mixer will change to the recording inputs one.  Click the check box under microphone to select it.  Also click the advanced button if you see it and choose +20 DB boost.  If you don't see the advanced button go back into the options menu and make sure show advanced controls is checked.  Close out of the mixer.

Double click the mixer again, it will be back in playback mode and click the mute check box below the microphone.  TS and Vent will work with a muted mic so that you don't have to hear yourself talking.

That should do it.
