In my experiences teens aren't great drivers because they tend not to pay attention. But where I live, teens are, for the most part, better drivers than most adults. I can't drive anywhere without some douche bag squeeling his tires because he didn't feel like slowing down from 35 to make a turn. Same goes for some ass bag who is rolling in some piece of shit early 90's Camry that is all primered out that has a $8 fart can going 30mph faster than everyone else, switching lanes every six seconds. My favorite one of all time though, is what some dumb ass did while he was in the left turn lane. He flipped a bitch, not the normal way, but over the bloody median. Cops saw it too, did nothing.

flipped a bitch?

and i agree totally about the attention part. i've actuallly pulled over before because passengers in my car (usually my little brother) were doing something highly distracting to me.  i also almost hit a parked car once because i flipped open my cellphone. needless to say, it stays in my pocket until i get to a light or my destination.

@nuk, i actually meant the central valley, but where i live (fresno), it might as well be san fernando. we've grown over 200,000 people in the last few years. its nuts. they've been adding and expanding roads but its just not enough.

just the other day i was taking my brother and his friend to a movie theater and we saw a car that was missing its entire front. some asshole was dicking around on his cellphone, smashed into a wall at 60mph, and died. he was talking on his cellphone and could have killed kids or something who lived behind that wall. the worst thing was that we had to call the cops. accident had to be sitting there for at least 5 minutes and not one person had reported it. only reason we did was because of that woman in new york who got murdered in the street and nobody did anything about it. makes me sick. in fact, thats the reason i posted this in the first place.

It is scary. I think the only way to fix the problems are by:

A) Requiring retest every 3-5 years (with your license renewal). Major penalties (jail time) for breaking.
B) Ban cellphone use while driving. If you are caught lose your license for 3 months and retake the test. Again, and you lose it for two years. Three times, no more driving permanently.
C) Harshen up DUI penalties to a loss of license for 3 years for first offense, 5 for the second (obviously tests to get it back), and permanently for the third.

These measures would make the roads much safer for everyone, and additionally reduce the income of civil suit traffic lawyers (which is always a good thing). Yes?

agreed, mostly. but instead of banning cell phone drivers from the roads, ban the drivers from the cell phones (IE, you can't own a cell phone, or you can only own one that dials emergency numbers only). and retest  should only go into effect 15 years after getting your license, and should be yearly after the age of 65.

you live in washington. i drive in a city full of assholes that have almost killed me several times. i am not invincible, i am scared shitless and tired of it. i want to be able to drive safely, and your generation is preventing it. once a teen almost hit me, and it was in a parking lot. four times adults have almost hit me on the highway. around 20 times they've almost hit me on streets. sometimes they cut me off and i almost hit them. i'm fucking tired of it, i'm tired of you and fuck heads like you that feel that all kids are morons. hint: some actually are smarter and wiser than you. am I? its possible, but i'd be fucking stupid to say so.

your only beef is that i am a teen. that makes you a fucking moron. do you deny that what i say is, in essence, true? no, you do not. please, stfu. you're the typical adult that automatically thinks anybody under the age of 25 knows absolutely fuck all about everything. don't reproduce, your genes are shitty. if you have, kill your children, and castrate yourself.

you also seem to assume that, because, most of the kids at school drive nicer cars than the teachers that i do too. i actually drive one of the less expensive cars at my school. hint: i drive a mustang (yeah, its a good car), most kids drive mercedes, BMWs, Lexus's, and one even has a god damned viper. my car is not nicer than most of the teachers' cars. go shoot yourself, you self righteous fuckhead.

the point is this: if i hadn't mentioned my age or experience in this post (which i did for a reason), every fucking one of you would have agreed with the majority of the list. you still do, but you're too damn proud to admit it. grow up asshole.

Your a fucking kid who's been driving for six months and you think you're a good driver?  The only way you could be good is by being cautious and aware of the fact that you are inexperienced.  Driving is the kind of skill that takes years of experience to develop.  You think that just because your all caught up on your drivers ed test you know what's what on the road?  Also, as far as being spoiled, if your parents are buying you your own god damn car, you're spoiled.  They should make you get a job and learn how to make a car payment on your own, not to mention pay your own damn insurance.

Edit:  Whether or not people wouldn't have given you flack or not if you hadn't mentioned your age, you did, and they did.  Deal with it, don't just spout personal attacks.

Your cellphone idea is better in theory, but how practical is it? Will we have to give out lists of who is banned from cell phones to all the providers so they can make sure certain people don't get them? What will happen if the cell phone providers allow banned drivers to get cell phones? Then we'll have to waste time prosecuting them too.

Retest shouldn't go into effect 15 years after, because teen drivers still are just as bad as adults. They may still know the rules perfectly for the six months to a year after they get their license, but many of the seniors I know who got their licenses as sophomores can't drive very well at all. Maybe, in fact, if we make the retests each three years until 25 (at 16, 19, 22, 25), then 5 years, people would get better driving skills ingrained in their head as young drivers, and consequently would be subconsciously better drivers later.

Older drivers are bad, but 65 is too young to start each year testing. Most 65 year old are fine drivers. 75+ is where degraded driving skills become a problem, and thus where the once a year retest would start.

actually, that is true. the worst drivers i know are the ones that started as sophomores.

the cellphone thing, well, since everything is computerized, providers could have system that autoupdates based on who's on an electronic list (provided by the court system, electronically over a network) and blocks the ID when a purchase is made, or locks an existing account. and, if during a traffic stop the cop finds a cell phone in the front seat, emergency use only ones (as mentioned in the above) excepted, automatic ban from the road for 4 years.

i also concede about old people.

well, it could come up when the cop runs the plates, and if the name on the license matches the restricted name on the plate run, then its all good.

started a month before 17, last month of my junior year.

So a certain name would be ascribed to a certain set of plates? If someone was banned but driving their other car, wouldn't they come out clean (or would this be solved by learning all plates of the offender during their first offense legal proceedings?)

So that's about 30 times in the 6 months you've been driving. As stated above, unless you live in Dallas or California, statisticly I live in a worse place to drive than you and I wasn't even close to that in my first year of driving so I'm going to assume that since you're the arrogant way you are, it's you that has been driving poorly and when you almost hit someone for going the speed limit, you blame it on them for going too slow.

Actually no. I've read more than a few "I'm the best driver in the world and I'm going to kill the next ________ for ________ing me on the road" rants. Most, if not all (not anymore now) are by adults (who say they are, I'm not just assuming to make a point) and I don't agree with them. They say the same bull about everyone driving too slow, almost hitting them, are bad drivers, etc. and I just laugh because they think they own the road (sound familiar?) and it's the teenagers that are shitty drivers. I may disagree with them but when it comes down to them versus you, I'm going to have to take their side based entirely on age and experience.

Younger drivers, and I consider myself one of them, are more or less completely up to date with all the recent road-rules while older drivers have not kept track of them. Also Older drivers got their licence at a time when testing wasn't so strict. My own mother only had to drive down a road, turn a corner and park to earn her full licence. I took a written test, waited six months, took a 30 minute practical test, waited 18 months and finally sat a one hour practical test to get my full licence.
However one of the most important factors in driving is experience. Older drivers have this while younger drivers think they have this.
Younger drivers are also let down by the "Fast and the Furious" fueled boy-racers who get humongous debts in order to do up their cars into noisey and fast machines and seal the deal by driving like fucking retards. Unfortunately this has meant that all young drivers, mostly young males between the ages of 18 and 25, are tarred with this brush that ensures higher insurance premiums and the negative view most older drivers have of us. It sucks but that's the way the world is.
Older drivers have arrogance and self confidence which is not entirely a good thing. When you're driving your aim is to not only drive YOUR car to the conditions and insure what YOU'RE doing is correct, but you also have to drive to other people's driving. Older drivers generally don't do this, countless times I've watched older drivers hoon around roundabouts, failing to indicate in the proper manner and failing to give way to the proper side. It's because they don't know about the rules yet they've got the confidence to believe that what they're doing is right.

So in summery; younger drivers fail because we lack experience and have the bad reputation our boy-racer, or "fucking retard" peers give us, and older drivers fail because they think they're all that and a bag of potato chips.

actually pirana, i have it very good in life, and parents made damn sure i knew it growing up. and like i said before, the point wasn't that i was better than anybody else, this was list of things i've noticed people do that has almost caused myself, my mother, my friends, my father, others, etc. accidents, or actually did get them into them.

and i do live in california, also previously stated in this thread.

and like i said, its possible that I'm smarter, but i have no idea who you are or anything about you, which is why it would be stupid for me to say i was. my point was merely that just because somebody is younger than you doesn't mean they don't know anything or are automatically worse than you at something. if you're a good driver, there's no reason to get pissed at what i've said, because you do know that most of it is unobjectionably correct, and while some of it may be my opinion, most of it is general road safety.

i also make a point to never go more than 5 over the posted limit, and thats only when i'm really in a bind. if i don't know the limit, i assume its 35 its its a single lane with a suicide lane, 40 for a double w/suicide.

about my car: well, my dad was planning on getting me something a hell of a lot cheaper, but he had just sold his corvette ZO6 and was having second thoughts, saw this car used at a dealership going for 5 grand less than usual, and decided not to pass. when he told me he was getting me a car, i asked for two things, if possible: a stick shift, and something with a CD changer, so i wouldnt have to dick around with CDs while driving.

and you're right about the maturity of the post. i've been having a shitty day and took it out on you, because i was angry about the way some people were treating me in the thread. i apologize for that.

Yea, flipped a bitch, means a U-turn.
