I don't consider many of the posts in question to be spam, per se. Analogies and symbolism work as well as pictures, and better than words, in some cases. Some of this spam is simply there to attain the desired results. I try not to miss the logic train in these events...

Personal Opinion:

Just get rid of D&ST, you can't even voice an opionon of how you feel about the subject matter without a flame war or a few almighty armchair world affair's quarterbacks jumping on your back ramming their Opinion down your throat because they get so upset when somebody doesn't agree with them.

There needs to be levity in D&ST, just as in real life. Sometimes it is good, sometimes it is taken overboard.

The reality is, there are very good discussions here from time to time. To me, "spam" such as "no u", "pics or it didn't happen" etc. are similar to people just spouting out of their ass with no logic or reason to back up their veiw - meaningless, and often funny.

Other solution; don't ban them completely, at least let them be able to view the section. And preventing them from posting because of a "lol" or "qft" post will prevent them from actually contributing something in a later discussion.

I say just keep things extremely strict. If someone doesn't contribute to the thread, warn them and delete their post.
