Double standard? where? oh! you mean that my view differs from yours? 4000 years of being the whipping child of the middle east, now the Israelis have a home. Gee, CamPoe, I'd think your heart would be gushing for the plight of the poor Israelis.
Double standard? Yeah.. I know which side gets their funding from selling heroin. I know which side loads up teenage boys on fanatical religion and drugs, then sends them charging at American or Israeli checkpoints.
Deeply ignorant? Not quite. I know which side to be on. One would behead me for my last name, my looks, my religion, or my nationality. The other side.. suffered a few thousand years of being chased off any decent plot of land, and/or being exterminated. Now they've got a sliver of land to call their own - and are not going to budge an inch.
It would be pointless to impress upon you the realities of the situation or the fact that I'm well aware that it's a two way thing and I can't be bothered reiterating the history and the circumstance of the region but I will say the following things:
a) They should have stood their ground against the Romans just like any other nation subjected to hardship. Now because of the holocaust they think they can pillage and steal what they like. The tyrannised have become the tyrants.
b) Have you seen the West Bank/Gaza? Where on earth is anyone supposed to grow heroine let alone get it through fucking Israeli border security???
c) Why do I still have my head?

Bear in mind that I have a distinctly Jewish looking nose.
d)
Poor Israelis? They're living the life of fucking reilly from what I saw on their side of the wall (perhaps not in Ashkelon/Ashdod).

Cam,
If it were simply about justice for the Palestinians, I'd take a different view.
knowing that Israel's neighbors would take military advantage of any land ceded from Israel to "Palestine" (Golan Heights for example) - no, there's no way I'd support a Palestinian state.
Middle Eastern culture is not Ireland.
Spend some time there. Learn the art of middle eastern Double-Speak. Learn how Lying is just part of the conversation. Learn how everything is a negotiation. Most importantly, learn how there are TWO sets of rules - one for them, one for the infidels, the women, and everyone else. Watch how fast their demeanor changes when they go from victim to victor - even within a matter of seconds.
Their sense of justice and fair play is not that of the western world.
The English and Irish at least understand the same set of rules.
The "palestinians" and Israelis aren't using those rules.
a) The Golan Heights is a different issue, separate from that of Palestine, and is of militarily strategic importance.
b) I have spent some time in the Middle East and study this conflict quite closely. I enjoy travelling to the middle east, it's a fascinating place.
c) The West Bank is a military liability: 2.5 million oppressed Palestinians living in large open air concentration camps hardly constitutes a military asset.
d) How about you try going to the Middle East and learn for yourself that the image of muslims portrayed on TV is not in the least bit representative of the vast vast majority of muslims. I found the Palestinians and Jordanians very friendly and hospitable and quite well educated.
e) There is no victor in this debacle. Both sides will lose in negotiations as both sides will have to make concessions. In case you weren't aware of this both Israel and Fatah are committed to a TWO STATE SOLUTION. So why you would see fit to fly in the face of their assessment as to the best way forward is beyond me.
