Source engine on low end comp

Contemplating getting my dad orange box, not sure if it will run decently on his aging machine.

P4 ~2.8GHz+
1.5 gb RAM
6800GT AGP

Now I know this would run the source engine a few years ago, but on the upgraded orange box engine, I dunno. Does anyone run something similar to this?

That would run it just fine as long are you aren't too picky about your eye candy. If really push comes to shove, you can always use DX 8.1 mode.

HL2EP2 runs fine on medium on my 1600+ with 1GB RAM and 6600NOTGT AGP.

You're too picky on what's low-end.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I run a P4 3ghz, 2gb ram, same video card.

It runs orange box more then well enough.

And, maybe once if ever, I'll second Freezer. Yes this setup is low-end for today's standards of a "gaming rig" but it's not archaic.

That's better than my PC. I have 1GB ram with the 2.8 P4. Mine runs HL2, Portal, TF2, CSS all fine with no lag and quick loading times. They run better than BF2.

Source Engine has always been kind Out of curiosity, what video settings are you running it at? (Resolution / Details etc)

That should run fine and that's really not as old as you seem to think it is.

QFT, Source games are done much better, something that might lag on BF2 with lower settings, will run surprisingly very smoothly with decent/higher graphics in a Source game. Just make sure you have a good processor in any case because Source games seem a lot more dependent on the proc than anything else from my experience.

Ok guys, thanks for the help.

I know it's really not that bad of a machine, but it hasn't been updated in I think three years, and that usually means you can't run the newer games very well. Example Crysis or CoD4 he probably couldn't run even at low settings, I barely can with a very new processor.

I know the source engine scales like a beast, I think what has been screwing my perception is I think my source defaulted to a higher video setting than I want. Every time I turn on the flashlight in EP2 it rapes my FPS down to 15 or less, down to even 5 in the caves.
