In a few posts I have read and the one that I have made, I have realised that although I have a good understanding of the way govt works in my country, I have almost no idea how it works in the US. If someone in the know could give me some quick tips on how the different levels of US govt works ( congress, senate, president etc) and what their powers are at various levels. Feel free to post me a link if you know a good concise description on the net.

Be as brief as you like. Bullet points, whatever etc.
Thanks for any help in advance.

A republican stands before the house and says "I have a bad idea", and then a democrat stands up and says "I can make it shittier".

Nice Lewis Black quote!!

If your rich, and full of shit you have a great chance of running the "show". . . . and by running the "show" I mean lying and basically doing whatever the fuck you want until your either voted out or your 8 years are up!

And if your in Congress (especially the Senate) you pick up a check for jerking off and spending money that you dont have. . . . . . . .

It truely is a beautiful system. . .

Think of it as a big auction.  We have 535 people in the legislature, of whom almost all want kickbacks from someone, so they get bribed by special interest groups.  They then make bills that favor these groups against the interests of the public.

The president has to decide whether or not he wants to pass each bill into law.  He usually weighs his own special interests against each bill and from there can decide whether to pass it or not.  If he chooses not to, then the legislature can still attempt to override the veto.  Vetoes are rarely overriden though.

As for the judicial branch, each Justice on the Supreme Court is appointed for life by whatever president is lucky enough to rule while a vacancy on the court is present.  Congress still has to confirm each appointee, but that's usually not so hard after the right palms are greased.

Wow, what a bleak view we have in this topic. I'm especially surprised at the insinuation that interest groups bribe the officials. Interest groups and PACs usually give money to incumbents (to make sure they have access as they will likely win reelection) and people who already agree with them.

I could mail someone my AP Government book, but you'll have to share.

Sometimes, bleakness and reality are the same thing.  This is especially true of politics.

Its a theory, in truth, it worked up to about 150 years ago, then people realized they could make money off of it and it has went down the shitter ever since. When I think government....I think....shit, I cant compare it to anything.

It works mostly by commitee, as that's where the real power is.

That's how I understand it.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
