Isn't the X supposed to represent the crucifix?

Alright it may not be a Stupid Question, but the way he went off on a "You Hate Jesus" Tirade while asking it made him sound like a twat, which I'm sure you're not.  But a simple "Where did the term Xmas come from?" would have sufficed.
That's not how I meant it. With all the political correctness in politics these days it seemed to me that that could be the reason why X is being used instead of Christ. Stores and malls have come under fire for using the phrases merry christmas.

FYI I'm not Christian myself so it doesn't offend me on that level. It doesn't really offend me on any level. It's just a question.

Ok guys, I wasn't going to rain on anyones parade or anything... but you all are way off.

The X obviously stands for Excellence.  Because Christ is so excellent we have to express it as much as possible. Even if it means replacing his name with "Excellence."  Since Excellencemas is taken (September 30th, my birthday), they had to shorten it to Xmas.

Dead giveaway.

True. All these people claiming Xmas is another instance of "political correctness gone mad" are just stupid.

No....

It's because it's shorter.

It has nothing to do with any ancient civilisation. Or politics.

It's shorter is all.

What about all those Xing signs?  Are we being unchristian by taking Christ out of that?

The use of "X," derived from Chi, the Greek alphabet initial, as an abbreviation for Christ (most commonly in the abbreviation "Xmas") is often misinterpreted as a modern secularization of the term. Thus understood, the centuries-old English word Xmas, is actually a shortened form of CHmas, which is, itself, a shortened form for Christmas. In fact, the use of "X" to represent the full word goes back to the earliest days of Greek Christianity.
You think normal people use Xmas because of that? Most people don't know this stuff. They do it for the reason I listed.

The X'ing signs obviously are alternative ways of saying "Religious People Around, Drive Slow"

"Christing".  So if there is a Railroad Christing, that just means that a bunch of Christians are gathering around the railroad to do some Christing.

Speed up.

Normal people when?

When it started being used as an abbreviation, absolutely. Nowadays, not so much.

Whoever said I was tolerant of the stupid?

In any case, the political correctness gone mad crowd are the last people who should be lecturing me on tolerance.

I'd say it would have more to do with being misinformed. It appeared to me that the only reasons for an X would be secularism or just  laziness/effeciency. We don't all go to wiki to try to make ourselves look smart.

Xmas is easier to type out than Christmas.

Also, it doesen't use my H key, which is almost free of ink by now.

Clearly you have discovered the true meaning of Tenmas.
