Why is nintendo doing so well and sony struggling?

If someone asked me 3 years ago who would be owning the handheld market i would have said the PSP, and if someone asked me which next gen console would own also i would have said the Playstation 3.
But now its almost 2008 and heres the figures:

Nintendo DS: 61.60M
PSP: 28.52M
Playstaion 3: 7.77M
Nintendo Wii: 17.07M
Xbox 360: 15.07M

Here in the UK the price of the Wii in most shops is around the £250 mark, and the playstation 3 around £270 mark, now why do people chose the Wii over the PS3, with the PS3 being a far more better console which includes a blue ray player which costs around £300 alone!, and also the 360 is just a standard console with no inbuilt HD player, so if you add that onto the £180 price tag that makes it up to £300.

Also the PSP has a inbuilt DVD player of sorts that plays very good quality DVDs aswel as playing games with a similar graphics level as the PS2 in such a small box!
The DS has a dual touch screen capability but lacks the good graphics of the psp, and doesnt include a dvd player.

So why is the more advanced consoles losing to the lesser Nintendo products?

Wii is more family orientated, thus more fun

Well you have to realise that the prices aren't the same all over the world.

Over here, a Wii costs 270$ (way less than you), and the PS3 is 400$ for the basic version.

Edit: Also, the HD player for the 360 is only 200 bucks here.

the fun only lasts for 2 weeks
i had a DS
for 6 months
then i traded it for a PSP

You could have the most technically advanced piece of hardware in the world. Yet, if the software is not there, then it makes the whole thing pointless, atleast, we are in for Gran Turisimo5, MGS4 and GTA 4 in the coming months, would love to see tht russian dude playable on the wii tho, lmao!

On another note, all this stuff on the sony machines, UMD, blu-ray etc, is all well and good, and if u ask gamers do they want it, I think you would get a yes. HOWEVER, if you asked them are they willing to pay a premium of some 30% ish for it, then the reactions change, as those figures would suggest.

DS is so massive as its aimed at girls, old peeps, and non-gamers... and its cheap enough. I know so many people getting a DS (and or Wii) that have never/would never have another type of console

I don't think future console markets will be dominated by Wii like consoles.

The PSP in the UK is cheaper that the DS right now, and imo better games too..thats why i got a PSP.

The Wii is really for all ages. My brother bought his awhile back and he's had so many of my family members playing Wii Sports that have never touched another gaming console. My Uncle and Aunt bought one for and my grandma bought it for her grandaughters. So people who have never been in the market for a gaming console are now in it and younger people still like it.

It should now start selling more units and close that gap.

Wii owns, it outsold the other systems because there was higher demand for wii's due to the wii's lower price, the Xbox and Ps3's starting prices were ridiculous. Nintendo is focusing on selling systems right now at a low price so that people will buy more of their games due to more systems being sold.

Here we go, that's the only way the PS3 could compete with the other consoles. As someone said, no matter what hardware you have in the console, it's always the GAMES. And, since Sony don't have any of their AAA games out, then they have to suffer.
