the only reason why i am a global warming skeptic is the carbon credit system. there is not a solid body of evidence to suggest that warming or general pollution correlates with carbon. carbon output is a rough measure of the entire industrial output of a society, and a great deal of carbon, barring the dubious greenhouse effect, could be produced with little environmental harm and great benefit to people. Most of the filtration techniques available for factories and generators are not used. We could produce tons of poverty-fighting energy if we just cleaned up fossil fuel burning capabilities to a 21st century level.

Most independent and private environmentalists would like to see the restoration of habitat, restrictions put on the output of known hazardous chemicals, sustainable farming and silvacultural techniques, etc. None of these things are accomplished by a tax against carbon, but the sudden awakening of our elite to environmental issues focuses almost uniquely on their ideas for new taxes and right to steal land. Its seems fairly obvious to me that the real environmental movement is actually harmed by elites obsession over global warming, many people that would be working towards a cleaner planet are wasting their time lobbying for a few policies that should do little to solve the issues of pollution but do a lot towards preserving the present political order. But im sure the sheeple will focus on the potential for these programs to solve real problems because that is the interpretation they were given.

Dont think you are right marinejuana. There is stacks of evidence , thousands of research papers saying there is a solid, almost undeniable link to CO2 output and global warming. Our atmosphere is pretty much a closed system. We are dumping billions of tonnes of CO2 into it each year. It is inevitable that this type of imbalance will have a consequence. In this case it is gradual warming of the earth.
I totaly agree with your point in cleaning up our emissions, however instead of cleaning up existing coal burning technologies, spend the money on other technology that has NO emissions, and that can provide base load power. Eg Solar thermal and Geothermal. Wave generation etc. The technology is there now, we just have to bring it on line. This would result in no emissions, same amount of electricity for the people. Beginnings of a new indusrty and all the money that would go with that.
