My new video card?

I just got the e-geforce 8800 gt graphics card, and the salesperson techy asked me if it would run on my power supply, now im not good with computers and was wondering where you check what the power supply is?

Now I got my old card out and my new one in but whenever I start my computer it just makes a whistle sound and doesn't do anything?

It should be written on your power supply somewhere. That's about the only way to find out.

just open the computer up, find the sticker on the side, and read it. it should say XXXXW (w=watt, X=some number)

it should be at minimum 500w.

your problems are stemming either from it (the PSU) being too weak, or your card isnt installed correctly (is the power dongle in? this is the cord that is running from the PSU to the card)

Get yourself a nice 500-600W PSU. They're not *that* expensive.

ooooooooooooooooo, dear, no, dont even try your luck with that. Minimum is like 450W I think they say, with an even higher recommendationg, and the general rule us you add 10% onto the recommended requirements.

You my friend, really need a new PSU. OCZ 600W, will do the trick.

if you try to run your card on that you risk shorting it, which will likely kill it.

Hopefully I didn't... Kinda sucks because I went to futureshop and it just closed (fucking train) so now i won't be able to use my computer for a couple days. and I ran and nvidia 7300 on 300.

As long as there is a power connector for the card to the PSU, you should be fine.
