So yesterday I was poking around teh internatz and I got a pop-up that brought me to a site saying my computer was infected....I thought "well just a stupid pop-up" and it appeared to download something automatically and I immediately closed the page.

Now, I've got a virus on my computer than generates ads automatically. IE isn’t even open and these ads pop up every 5-10 mins, I woke up this morning to about 25 pages open with these auto-ads.

I've tried everything I can think of, ad-ware scans, McAfee scans and whatnot....I even blocked the sites that would pop up but that has done nothing.

I'm real frustrated and would appreciate any help, thanks.

Download Spybot search and destroy and run it in safe mode.

Also, try to find what exe file it is. Google that and find out what it does, and if it's associated with any other files (such as dll files). Write all these down. If you have trouble using a virus scan program in Safe Mode, go into the registry (AND BE VERY VERY CAREFUL), and delete these files individually.

I had to use this method about a year ago to rid myself of a virus.

try clearing all your temp files + temp internet files + history in safe mode (use shift del to perm delete without sending them to recycle bin)

Do above in safe mode

Oh yeah just make sure you del contents and not whole folder or you'll end up with really messy system

saw post above - if you're not sure what process is what then try downloading security task manager trial from

www.neuber.com

This should give you an idea of what process is dodgy and if you do start deleting things might be an idea to crate a restore point just in case

Also try Ad-Aware.

Another thing you could try is going to "Start > Run > type "msconfig". Go to the Startup and Services tab and look around for progs you've never heard before. Uncheck the boxes and try to find the root file.

trust me it can - installed things without creating proper folders so you end up with random shit everywhere that you've got no idea if it's relevant or not..
i.e you uninstall something and it leaves files behind - you got no idea what files are part of wat prog app etc - very annoying when your running out of disk space!!

If the other suggestions didn't help try out counter spy, it has a 15 day free trial and i've had it get rid of stuff nothing else would. But if all else fails it may be time for a format, sometimes its quicker and easier to start over than to fix it.
