My friend got a new computer and he needs help on how to get the internet started on it. I fail with google and he needs your help. So what does he have to do? Karma to teh winner!
Plug in his modem, get an internet plan, and start using it.
you have to install drivers if I remember right. I've always had a friend do it so I'm not to sure.
He has bellsouth internet and it usually comes with a disk. But he cant find the disk. I didnt have to use the disk for mine and i dont remember how i did it. The problem is when he just plugs the ethernet cable in it does nothing, it cant find an internet connection.
well, assuming it's a new pc, it has all the drivers, and it reads the modem fine, so is the modem pluged into to phone jack?

The modem has a unique id - ie physical address - that it holds from one connection. He probably needs to reset the modem. This would involve power down the modem and disconnecting it from everything. If that fails I would kick the living shit out of the pc,

you'll need to find out what modem / modemrouter combo he's using and download the drivers for it. that should do the trick. I f you want pm me his info and i'll do a bit of research too
Give some more information...
Dial-up? -> Plug it in
DSL? Cable? -> Internal, USB or Ethernet?

Thats what he has
there's no dsl filter on the line to the modem, right?
just checking...
if that's not it, call bellsouth...

hmm, when a internet connection sees a new comp there should be a pop up requiring for some passwords.
the modem should have a local IP, on mine it's 192.168.0.1 (they usually say it on the bottom the default IP), but my modem is not a westell however, it should still work if you go to that IP address with a web browser. There should be a place somewhere in there to type in a e-mail or username and a password, or something similar to that. If once you type in the correct name and password, it should all work, and if not, i'm at somewhat of a loss for what to do next =/
This might have some usefull info for you

We reinstalled him computer entirely. IE reformated. When we stick the cd in the fucking program cant recognize the ethernet cable and it says to use a usb cable. Wtf?
Find out what brand the network adapter is, go on good computer and download the most recent drivers. (or if you have the disk from the mother board it should have them on it)
Install network adapter drivers and you should be fine?

did you build it from scratch? be sure to install the motherboard drivers, including the network drivers.
make sure modem is plugged in correctly to everything and power up. are there 2 lights, usually orange and yellow, one steady, one blinking next to the ethernet jack on the back of the computer? if so, good. the network drivers are working. if one light is on steady, theyre working, its a problem with your modem. call bell south.
the modem should be able to function without installing any of its software.
