External hard Drive on Mac

I have a Macbook Pro running Tiger OS X and I bought a removable hard drive and I can't put stuff on, take stuff off etc on the hard drive.

The problem is obvioulsy it has to be formatted for Mac but how do I do this?

Mac OS X will read most data partitions (all Mac ones, all FAT ones, UFS and NTFS(read only)), it doesn't specifically have to be formatted for Mac. To do the formatting, use disk utility (in utilities).
