I wanted to upgrade my RAM, so I took one of them out (two 512s) to see what kind it was, then put it back in.
When I started the computer back up, it said the memory had changed, and asked if I wanted to continue or enter the setup thing.

Since I only took the memory out and put it back, I assumed I could just hit continue.
..which I did.

But now...when I check my memory, it says I only have 510MB.

I tried taking it out, restarting the computer, putting it back, restarting the computer, but nothing helps.

Any ideas?

Also, while we're on the subject, is it possible to have 3 GB ram? (3 x 1GB)
I've seen 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB packages, but no 3 GB.
..and would it be helpful to get 3 (if possible) or 4 GB instead of 2?
I got 1 GB right now.

I have 3GB.  2 x 512MB + 2 x 1GB = 3GB.  Are you sure the RAM is properly seated?  It sounds like one stick is not being recognized.  Did you drop it or bang it into anything?  I will help extra if it's meant to torrent stuff

You didn't send any static through it, did you?  That can stuff up any chip.

Its so uplifting to see the maturity of some people.

Nuk: I'm pretty sure a better net connection would do a lot more for torrenting. So no.

Spike: Well I assume it is. I tried putting it back in about 3 times. I could try again though. I didn't drop it or anything though.
Is all your RAM from the same company? The RAM I'm planning on getting is different from the one I have. Would they work together?
..and yes, it's meant to torrent stuff.

Panda: Not that I know of.

It's very possible you might have fried your RAM via static electricity. Makes sense, atleast.

Troll, your one-note stance has been noted and ignored already.

However, in your monomaniacal zeal, you have failed to notice the legitimate uses for t3h ebil torrentzes..  like operating system patches (linux-land), game patches (WoW, in particular), and distributed computing systems (group compilers, beowulf clusters).
I know. I should have been more specific. I find it wonderful how you put words in my mouth, though. It really speaks about how solid your points are.

And on topic, just make sure they are dual channel kits and in the right slots, as Mr. "Speak for me" said. You probably didn't put the RAM in properly, fried it, or something got in the slot.

Maybe the MPAA or something similar is reviewing his resume at the moment.

Thanks for the advice though.

nukchebi0, your anti-pirating campaign isn't going anywhere.  What the fuck are you, a cop or something?  Christ.  Just leave.  If you haven't figured it out already, no one likes you.

I had this problem with one of my previous PCs. After I had reassembled everything I found that one of my sticks of ram was not being recognised. Flipped on CPu-z, and after switching the sticks around, I discovered that it wasn't the ram that was fuck'd, but rather the ram slot.

My friend indicated that I did not have the power supply plugged in(grounded), and that is what could have caused the issue.

No, just someone with some maturity and respect the laws.

Brilliant job of speaking for everyone, idiot. I like your assumptions, which are obviously made out of anger and impulsive thinking. You should read what you say before you post it.

And please, reply to this in PM, I don't want to further derail the thread.

I'd rather keep it public so others can reply stating how they dislike you as well.

And where'd you learn all that fancy grammar?  Word-A-Day?

Wow, are you three? People might accidentally hit things sometimes, and if you had looked again, you would have noticed I fixed it.

About the second comment, I see you have garnered much public support thus far.

Finally, I learned all the fancy grammar from reading...because I do more than just play games. Very good comment, though. It highlights nicely how well you've meshed in the anti-intellectual culture of America. If you, or any of your three supporters has a problem, message me, not post in here. I will not respond in here again except for discussion relevant to the topic.

That'd be my guess too. It's easy enough to fry them.

Defcon do you know your system specs? If so we can help you find some descent replacement ram.

I can't be bothered to read through the whole thread, too much flaming, but, you could have fried it, when you handle regular ram without the cover on you have to be very careful not to touch the chips, handle it by the edges. Best way to test I'd say is take out one chip, boot it up, how much memory does it recognize? Then do the same with the other stick, if it recognizes both chips to have 512 each then i don't actually know(but it'll mean both sticks are ok) , but test both individually, process of elimination my friend.

Morning.  Oh, you fixed it.  Very nice.  Although I would use the Preview button next time.

Not many will post in 25 minutes, and few of those would openly post that they dislike another member instead of sticking to the topic.  I, however, believe that views should be strongly expressed, and if I get a tempban while doing it, then so be it.  It makes a point.

And you do things other than playing games?!  SHOCKING!  How are your grades dude?  PSAT/SAT scores?  Let us compare them.

I dislike nuk's elitist attitude.  OK good for you, you are a nice law abiding citizen.  I respect that.  But you don't have to go spouting it off and claiming superiority over everyone else, especially not on a gaming forum where you know for certain that you will face overwhelming opposition!  My lord, I've never met anyone with such a hard-on for anti-pirating.  We should get this argument going in Debate & Serious Talk!

@Defcon
Yes my 3GB of RAM is all from the same company.  You can mix and match RAM from different companies as long as it's not in dual channel.  Or you could have 2 separate dual channel configurations with different brands of RAM in each one.  This is hard to explain, I hope you know what I mean.  Do what Ec0li said - boot with each stick individually to figure out which one is bad and replace it.

Well I have two bottom slots, and two top slots. The bottom slot of each has white release handles, and the top ones have black release handles.
One of the RAM is in the top slot of the bottom two (black), and the other is in the bottom of the top two (white).
Is that okay, or do they both have to be in the same color?

First of all, if you want 3gb of ram, you want a combination of 2x1gb and 2x512. Since doing it this way will run 2 Dual Channels, rather then 1 dual channel then a 3rd 1gb chillin there. It runs faster the way i suggested.
Try to get low timing ram, because your ram will only run as fast as the slowest stick.

Also, you probably broke 1 piece of the ram and your comp is probly only reading 1 stick now. Replace it all with a new set of 2x1gb. Then if you have the money, buy an equally fast (once again, check the timing in the specs of the seller(use newegg)) 2x513 package and stick that in your other 2 slots of your mobo.

Indeed, you're a tool nuk.

What's this high horse of being mature and respecting the law? Can't you think for yourself? Do you instantly think that anything the government says is correct and should be followed? Way to go.

Companies make too much money from music/movie sales, it's a joke and I'm more than happy to torrent music.

Tell me something, if it's so against the law, why are people still doing it and why are the police doing NOTHING about it? Because they couldn't give a shit, that's why.

Fight against exploitation of children or racism, but piracy? Jeez.

It varies from motherboard to motherboard. I had the same question when I was installing my RAM and my mobo manual had a whole page devoted to "Dual-Channel Memory Population Rules".  So check your manual out.  I think you should have a space between the two sticks, like this (crappy visual):

-----stick one-----
-----empty-------
-----stick two-----
----empty-------
