The habit of putting in even numbers of RAM sticks is a leftover from the days when you needed an even number of sticks, or the system wouldn't work.
It's slightly more efficient to have even numbers, but the difference is negligible. Insisting on even numbers of memory today, is about like insisting that there are always an even number of people in your car whenever you drive; Yes, it's more balanced and technically should handle a little better - but you're not going to notice the difference in any real-world scenario.
