There's been a lot of talk about how to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. All the plans I've heard so far sound like complete shit, except for one...

What if we gave illegals the option to work toward citizenship through joining the military? If they are willing to die for us, why not give them the ability to become citizens here after serving a tour of duty?

The cost of training and equipping them would be insane. They would also be serving for the wrong reasons. A good portion of illegals don't speak English neither. I can only imagine the problems that would cause in military operations.

What we need is politicians that support enforcing the existing laws/making them tougher, and build a fence patrolled by the National Guard and Border patrol. . . . Its not that hard to secure the border if the politicians make laws that do it!! So far the current wave of politicians are "empty suits" on the issue!! Except for the Sheriff of Maricopa County in AZ, and Tom Tancredo.

I'm not really sure what people think is an alternative to amnesty. It's not physically possible to deport millions of people.

A wall wouldn't work. I mean, just look at the Berlin wall. That thing had guards, automated machine guns, the whole shabang. And still, people managed to find a way through.

damn right, we cant have a bunch of mexicans taking all the good lettuce picking jobs from us citizens.

fuck it, money gets you anything you want in this country, why dont the wetbacks just pay for citizenship, charge a couple thousand bucks per person, cash or credit, and they can have all the citizenship they want. and then they get put on the short list for drafts, jury duty, all that shitty citizen stuff.

Im not too sure on the details but I believe a program like this already exists. Maybe its greencard applicants who can get citizenship a lot easier if they join the military.

It does exist already. And as to Cam's post...it requires a period of honorable service, so a discharge for misconduct won't get them anything except the problems associated with having a less-than-honorable discharge on your record.

I support an amnesty in the form of illegals working and contributing to society in measurable ways as a way of gaining citizenship, along with heavy fines.

Amnesty still won't stop people from coming here illegally. Perhaps we should look at the requirements for citizenship and renumerate the quotas, along with perhaps making the application itself a little easier/cheaper. Either that or start punishing the people who make illegal immigration profitable.
