I know how to ping a site to get the ip. but when i type that ip into my address bar to connect to that site most of the time it does not work even though the site is not blocked. (im tryn to help friends get onto a forum that was blocked at there work)

you did add :80 to the end of the IP?

:80 meaning "port 80" which is the universal web/http port

Some sites also protect from access by direct ip with htaccess to help bolster security a little (allthough IP based telnet attacks are so rare in the age of the script)

If you add :80 to the end of the IP and it still won't connect, it likely never will.

Suggest you find one that isn't. I'll bet my left leg that one of these will work:

That said, many of the proxy sites easily found on google will be blocked.

Also, be careful when using proxy sites. I would advise not to visit any important sites, i.e. online banking - entering your bank details. I'm sure it's possible for the owner of the proxy site to retrieve the information as you're connecting through him. I may be wrong.

Sometimes you just can't navigate to a site by IP. For example, if they're hosting multiple web sites on one server, they all have the same IP address, but the server doesn't know which site you want unless you use the domain name.

try http://www.google.com/translate_t

enter address under  Translate a Web Page, it will take longer than usual to view, but it should work, if google.com domain isn't blocked by domain controller.

Probably the reason you can't connect directly to the IP is because it is on a shared IP, meaning there are multiple websites on one IP.

You could always boot Damn Small Linux from a flash drive or something, if you were really desperate.

At our school you can use Firefox Portable to get past the filters.

Also....

[This may sound ridiculous, but it honestly works]
[Our school uses symantec for the filtering system]

When you first login to Windows, you enter your user name, then your password, and click login.

You then get the "Loading Personal Settings" "Applying Personal Settings" etc stages.

Unplug the ethernet cable that is connecting your computer to the network AS SOON as the "Applying Personal Settings" stage pops up. Wait for a while until it comes up with an error message, plug the cable back in, and press ok.

Thats it!

[You may also notice that some times when you do this any restrictions the school puts on your workstation such as not been able to access control panel are no longer present..... but you still cant change any settings.]
