This is a habit I've always had when setting up my system, thought I'd share.

1.  Download process explorer (or download all sysinternals tools) and unzip them where you want. Run procexp.exe from wherever you unzipped it to.

2. From the menu go to Options -> Replace Task Manager. From now whenever you open the task manager process explorer will open.

Process explorer does all the same stuff the original task manager does but it is a great deal more configurable in terms of what you can see.

The main reason I like it is because you see (and search) what files/registry keys a particular process is running and close the handles without actually killing the process itself. Handy if you are a suspicious person

In the menu you can go to "View" the click "Show lower pane"
