Just installed XP on a new build, I never asked this so, is there anything in XP that really isn't necessary?

If it's a commercial CD (IE, you bought the operating system, it didn't come with a computer and it's not OEM) then there's not any real point besides saving a few MBs.

Just keep on top of msconfig and you'll be good.

Ya, I hate installing new software that insists on loading on startup

I'm the only one in my house with any decent knowledge of a computer and whenever my parents or siblings say "zomg fix computar NOAW!" all I have to do is uncheck 7/8 of the startup list and possibly defrag. It has got to be the most common slowdown of the average family computer, and it's so pathetically quick and easy to fix.

you can turn off a lot of stuff in... msconfig and in administrative tools(msconfig from the run prompt and then choose startup and uncheck the programs that dont need to startup...you can turn them back on by checking the boxes again...

control panel/administrative tools/services... you can turn off processes...click on a process and it will tell you what it does...
or you can type the name of the service in google and see what it does and if its safe......

if you have 2 gigs of ram and a decent proc and graphics card than you shouldnt have to turn off much

tuneup utilities 2008(30 day trial) has a cool feature that turns off a lot of the eye candy and turns off an XP feature that uses part of your bandwidth for services... that can be backed up by tuneup utilities 2008

Also, not sure if you use it turn off system restore on all drive, just wastes space and resources.
