I was wondering whether people would recommend a sound card for me.
I play lots of games, listen to lots of music, watch DVDs and am on ventrilo most of the time. Would be really nice if people could help me with this.
Also if anyone could recommend some decent surround sound speakers with long enough cables to go round a reasonable size room. All recommendations appreciated.

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty for the sound card.  I don't have 5.1 or higher speakers so I can't recommend any.

If you've got digital speakers you can do with an onboard card, if not, just get the best X-Fi your budget allows for.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I have a Creative card, and I have noticed that thier mic capabilities are shit.  I have a damn good and expensive mic, but Creative's software doesnt really allow much tweaking in that field.

but, my card is from 2005, so im a bit out of the loop i guess.

XtremeMusic or XtremeGamer Fatal1ty.

Unfortunately, Creative's drivers were written by a room full of chimpanzees pooping on keyboards. More unfortunately, their sound cards are the most supported for games.

Is there much of a difference between the XtremeMusic and the XtremeGamer? I'm also looking for a soundcard, one with its own little processor to keep the cpu free of anywork.

Don't buy the Audigy SE for gaming.

Actually, I bought a Fatality Champion because it has the awesome front panel- I have to connect a MicroKORG through MIDI as well as the Fatality headset to my computer. Seeing as all previous Audigy / X-Fi cards do not support front-panel (Intel HD) connectors, I would have to get down around the back of my computer every time I wanted to use my headset. No thank you!

There is a lot more justification behind the higher price-tag than just a name of a gamer. Fatality's stuff is actually good-quality hardware; it's not the sound-cards that you should hate, it's the shameless fan boys that buy is solely because of the name tag.

yes!!! agreed! Now my new motherboard - see sig - has a better integrated sound than the previous one, actually it's a small daughter sound card that you place in a special slot and it really gives a very good sound!

I prefer an actual sound card over onboard, not only because it takes a load off of system resources, but because the audio quality is noticeably better. The Fatal1ty X-Fi is a good compromise between the super-expensive and the cheap X-Fi's, has a nifty front panel, and slightly better hardware than lower-end iterations.

With an X-Fi You get better positioning of sound because the have CMSS. But it's not HiFi. Also EAX 5.0 - other cards only have 2.0 so You get a little extra. CMSS is nice in games. With CMSS and headphones the chopper sound f.ex. is different if it is behind You versus in front of You so You can tell where it is. Just increase the high freq. in the equalizer because CMSS changes the sound. 4.1 speakers is good also. Nothing like hearing shoots behind You to the right - ahhh there's the enemy. I can hear no difference between the X-Fi Xtreme music and X-Fi Fata1ety Xtremegamer pro so I recommend this:
