Finally I got my laptop today-whuhu MF.

HP pavillion-15,4 inches

Turion x2 1,9ghz

2gb ram

7150 graphics

160 gb HDD

all for under 600 £

But the guy at the store advised me to save the OS when starting up vista.

How am I supposed to do this- Just a window popping up and then just insert a DVD disc and it will install?

Which type of DVD do I need since there are more types of them?

thx-IM so happy

You want to know which version of vista to get? Family premium 32bit oem.

Unless you plan on transfering that copy of vista to another computer, in which case get the full version.

nope I bought this laptop with vista premium.

but this guy recommended to make a back-up of the OS before using the computer itself for work etc.. How would I do that and just I only use a regular DVD.

He recommended me in doing this if my laptop broke so I did not need to buy an extra copy of the OS.

So I can back up my OS when I for instance have used the comp for 1 week. But would it not be smartest backing the OS up when first turning on the switch. So I just need a regular DVD and just put it on? He said when finising adjusting settings this option would come.

I don't have a clue about Vista.

But the first thing I would do is back it up.

That goes for any computer or OS.

So I just need a regular DVD and put it in when the OS asks for it. Can the OS +small programs be on one DVD? Just being sure-lol

I dont know what he (the guy who told you to back it up) was really talking about.
Honestly, depending on who you get the PC from, you might or might not get the Windows Vista install disk. This is absolute bullshit that some complanys dont give you the install disk with your Windows based PC.

He likely somehow meant to make a fresh backup of Windows Vista before you go downloading stuff incase you ever want to start with a fresh copy of Windows again. Most users would reformat but it requires the Windows Vista install disk which you probly didnt get.

I don't know how you would go about backing up your shit so that it can be reinstalled without an install disk, but i would say just fuck it and use your laptop.

Then if you do want to reformat you should call up the place you bought it from, or call HP, and ask them 'Hey how am i supposed to reformat if you didnt give me my xp disk/key! asshole'

You need to make an image of your C: and back it up to DVD.  Usually best to create a image of a freshly installed operating system i.e. like what you have now and then install all your junk later.

Best tool on the market is Acronis True image.  If you want to reinstall just restore the image you created.

Go to the usual places to obtain Acronis if you're poor.

Vista can create an image of C: ?

We are not talking about a backup and restore facility here.  The whole of C: is captured into 1 large file (XP is about 3-4GB) which you just restore when you feel like it/need to and it feels like a fresh install.

Yup 1-2 DVD will do it, proberbly 1 will be sufficent.  Just follow all the instructions your laptop gives you, should be straightforward and easy.
