Many OEM computers have a small hidden partition that contains the an image of the default OS and programs install. I believe that he was telling you to make a copy of this partition for restoration purposes.
well, he said that Vista would ask if I wanted to make a back up when doing the settings when I turned on the comp for the first time.
And that may very well be, but it may be part of the OEM's setup process. I've not really dealt with new OEM computers running Vista, but over the 15 years I've been working in the industry, I've seen this quite a bit where there is no physical media provided, but they give you an image of the default installation on the hard drive, and then you make your own restore disk.
ya get acronis it is good stuff. Just pop in your backup disc and you get a fresh C: drive. I love it.
I've had 2 complete harddisk crashes. The ones where the HD dissapears, pc won't boot and I have to format the disk and reinstall the OS. Crappy Maxtor.
