So I've got a laptop and I want to connect to the internets through my cable modem, but when I plug all the cables in I cannot connect. When I did this for my PC all I had to do was connect the large cable from the wall to my modem and the cat6 cable from my pc to my modem and I was all set,  but when I do the same for my laptop I get no connection.

Is there any extra steps I have to take or anything  special I have to install for my laptop to get a connection?

All help is appreciated.

So your latptop doesn't have wireless??

I guess it could, but your router doesn't have wireless....Anyway, I don't know why it wouldn't just work by plugging it in, but try this:

Plug the cable into your laptop, but ensure its a good cable, sometimes they can be missing a prong and not work

If its a good cable go to start-> run, type in cmd (This will open your command prompt)

then, type ipconfig

It should show you what the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway numbers are. If it all shows 0.0.0.0 or something, then you need to type in: ipconfig /renew

It should try to get an ip automatically from your ISP.

If this doesn't work, I dunno!

Some ISP's log the MAC address of the NIC to your account when it is activated.  If this were the case, then your laptop having a different MAC address would not be able to connect.  You may need to contact your ISP to determine if this is the case.  If it is, then I would recommend that you get a router and spoof the MAC address of the router to match that of the NIC in your desktop system.

If they do not lock in a MAC address, make sure that all of the necessary protocols are installed and that you are set to get your IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS addresses using DHCP.

Lastly, go into the properties of your network connections, right-click on the icon for your wired connection, and select repair.  This will force the card offline, then back online, clear and renew IP and DNS information.
