  • Computer Won't Boot (is it the motherboard? power supply? cpu?)

Alright, a couple weeks ago I got a new computer and gave my old one to my little brother. Before giving him the computer, I reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled everything and gave him a fresh start. Now, over the past 4 or 5 months, that computer would not start up right away when I pushed the power button. I would have to flip the PSU switch in the back, press the power button, and anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes later the computer would finally turn on and boot up fine. A problem, yes, but a big deal? No.

Anyways, got the old computer working fine. Then my brother moves it into his room and it won't boot up at all. Has the same surge protector I was using and everything. I'd go through the same procedure I had been doing (flipping the switch, pressing power, and waiting) and the thing would never turn on.

A friend and I thought it must've been the power supply, so we switch it and still the same thing happens, won't boot right away. Then we figured it might be the motherboard. I ordered a new one and finally it came yesterday, I hook everything up.... and nothing happens.

The strange thing is that with the new motherboard, when I flip the switch on the back of the psu, everything powers up and all the fans turn on. However, the thing won't boot at all. When I ordered the new motherboard, I got a processor with it (as part of a combo deal) [plus the new processor would fit the mobo socket, which was different than my old processor] and it was OEM, so it came in this little plastic case padded with styrofoam in the case.

So the setup with the old mobo won't turn on at all, and the setup with the new mobo and cpu (but same HDD and graphics card) turns on right away but doesn't boot. Any suggestions?

It's particularly frustrating because my brother spent a lot of his christmas money on a new monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and I had everything ready, then the moment I give it to him it stops working. Plus, some of his stuff isn't refundable (I don't know why but that was the policy), so we can't just return everything.

so you've tested a new PSU and Mobo?  Maybe one of the case wires that connects the motherboard to the power button is fault... you wouldn't happen to have another case lying around?

But actually, the whole deal where the fans turn on but it doesn't boot sounds like more of a hard drive issue, can you get into the bios when this happens?  I've had bad CD drives do that too me before too..

Firstly, if you're old mobo was socket 478, its more than likely the cause of the issue in the old setup. They like to spontaneously crap out.

Secondly, how many IDE connectors does your new mobo have? Are you sharing the ribbon between the HDD and CDROM?

To Commie:
Unfortunately I don't have another case lying around. I was thinking that might be an issue. I'm going to tell my family to take it to a local tech support place and maybe they can try it out.

When all the fans turn on and everything, nothing even shows up and the PC speaker doesn't make a sound. The HDD was working fine and I don't think it would randomly crap out.

To Cheez:
Yes it was an old 478. I guess it's possible it could spontaneously crap out, but it's frustrating since it happened right when the computer exchanged hands.

The new mobo has two IDE connectors and I have the optical on one and the HDD on the other (same setup as with my old mobo).

I discovered that one of my jumpers on the HDD fell off and lost the metal part, but even still, the BIOS or some sort of flash screen should show up once I turn everything on. Also, when I left the computer "on" (whatever state you want to call it), my videocard heatsink would get warm, the HDD would get warm, but the CPU heatsink would not. So is it possible I just got a faulty CPU?

Try booting with minimal hardware.

No HDD, CDROM, cards, etc.

If you have two or more sticks of RAM, try just one.

You have plugged power into the video card, yes?

I tried booting with just mobo, cpu, and gfx power and still nothing. I've also only plugged in only one stick of RAM and still same problems.

Okay... If you have nothing (except CPU) do you at least get a beep code?

I haven't tried just the CPU only. But when I had everything else plugged in, I wouldn't get any beeping whatsoever.

I'll definitely have to try the CPU only and see if anything comes up. If there aren't any beeps I'm assuming it's probably the motherboard?

I don't think that is the problem, as you just but a new motherboard in and the problem is still there...
Try removing the GPU and plug the monitor on the onboard graphics thingy. And maybe try a diffrent CPU?

Well the new mobo has a new CPU since it's a different socket. And the new mobo doesn't have on-board graphics... or is that the COM port? But it's male, so does that mean I need a vga cable with one female end?

Sorry, I don't imderstand what ports you're talking about. Could you make some pictures of the back of the PC ( with all the ports visible)?
Cameraphone will do

Ow and it may sound silly but: are all cables properly connected to your motherboard and other components?

Well I'm 99% sure the mobo doesn't have on-board graphics, which is why I was a little confused as to how I should plug the monitor in. And yes, everything is plugged in properly

However, tonight I leave to go back to college, so this is my parents' problem now. I told them to take it to the local electronics store and get some tech support. If nothing works, they can always return the new mobo and cpu, but my brother will be left with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers, and no tower to plug them in to

Wait I'm a little confused Have you tried using a new Power supply?

I had the same exact problem a while back and I bought a new PSU, swapped it, then everything was fine.

The first time my computer wouldn't start booting right away was earlier in the summer. A friend and I figured the power supply had screwed up so we switched it and the computer was still having the same problems, so then we figured something must have gone wrong with the motherboard. I was about to try my current PSU (of my very new computer) with the screwed-up system, but it is 24-pin and the one for the problematic system is 20. I suppose I could tell my family to go out and buy a new PSU and if that doesn't work they can return it.

I am having the same exact problems. What a nightmare it is. I have a feeling it is the PSU.
