That´s $ 2,29 /l

So that would be $ 10,42 / gallon

And that's the price of the cheapest fuel.

CNN made this list in march 2005 haha I feel robbed!

Nation City Price in USD Regular/Gallon
Netherlands Amsterdam $6.48
Norway Oslo $6.27
Italy Milan $5.96
Denmark Copenhagen $5.93
Belgium Brussels $5.91
Sweden Stockholm $5.80
United Kingdom London $5.79
Germany Frankfurt $5.57
France Paris $5.54
Portugal Lisbon $5.35
Hungary Budapest $4.94
You pay € 0.684 in tax per liter and then a 19% value added tax on top of that.  Cumulative Dutch taxes on fuel are among the highest in the world, according to wikipedia.

The fuel price is increasing because the demand is increasing!
The new industrialised countries (china for example) need lot of fuel as the cars are becoming very common to the citizen (in the past the most common transport was bike)
The production of fuel is increasing but not as much as it should be corresponding to the increase of what the demand is.
In consequence, all the actual ressources in petrol will be dead in 40 years now, and all the petrol we could discover could only allow to go 40 more years: so in 80 years max there will no more have petrol!
And as much as the demand/offer is getting bad, the prices will increase, and this is why the prices will never be reduced.

(This is my opinon based on what we ofen see on the media)
(sorry for my bad english.. im french ;-)

Yep, our gouvernment is raising all taxes on fuels making it very very expensive. There are still around 8 million cars in the Netherlands (16 million inhabitants). That's 50% (USA is around 40%-45%).

The gouvernment is also making a lot of effort to get everyone in to public transport. We have the most busy train network in the world for instance.

far less people growing up use cars nowadays too, if you live in the city for instance you never use a car. I suppose that in 20 years the amount of cars in netherlands will decrease tbh.

This was bound to happen since day one of the use of the internal combustion engine.

Don't worry, when every oil well has been bled dry, and every penny has been swabbed out of every barrel, and a few more profitable energy wars go on, "out of the blue" some big company or government will just suddenly come up with some invention that will cure our woes.  Strangely timed not too soon, but not too late.

According to the US DOT, in 2005 there were 247,421,120 registered motor vehicles in the USA.  With a population of ~300 million, that is a lot more than 50% of the opoulation.

Actually, since the U.S. has 200 million illegal immigrants, that is accurate.

How could the military industrial complex profit if we weren't killing people?

World demand and regional instability in the Middle East are the main reasons for the rising costs of oil.
