Looking to build my first computer. Right now i play off an old Dell XPS laptop that barely runs Battlefield 2, let alot 2145. Still learning about computer compnents and what works well together, but this is what i came up with.

Case: Sigma Gaming LaVie Med-Tower Case w/ Window And Leather Trim Front Panel 420 Watts Power Supply with an extra fan and Enermax Eg565p 535 watt power supply upgrade – SLI Ready

CPU: Intel Quad Core Q6600 – Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Cooling fan

Motherboard: Asus P5N-E nForce 650i SLI Chipset

Memory: 2GB Corsair DDR2

Video Card: XFX/NVIDIA 8600GT 512MB x2

Monitor: 20 Widescreen from ViewSonic

Hard Drive: 250GB 7200RPM

Optical Drive: 20x DVD-R/RW DR-R/RW Dual Layer

Sound Card: 3D Wave On-Board 5.1

Speakers: 600 Watt PMPO Subwoofer Stereo Speakers

Network: Killer K1 10/100/1000 Gigabit High Speed PCI Network Card

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

All of this comes in at around $1600. If you guys could help me out and let me know if this will runs well or if there are compnents i should change or upgrade, that would be awesome.

2 8600GTs in SLI is useless. Get one 8800GTS 512MB and your fine. Id suggest a bigger hard drive as well. You probably want 4 GB of ram if youre going to run 64 bit vista and a better motherboard.

OMG change the GFX cards mate. Get a 8800GTS 512MB or HD 3870! And a Corsair HX520 for PSU. And a P35 mobo. SLi is just waste of money in that price range. I would suggest a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R. And 4GB ram for your Vista.

Ok, couple of things.

1. The video cards - SLi is a waste generally, especially with non top of the range cards. Much better off getting a single card for the same price as the two. Motherboard will also be cheaper then.

2. Where are you getting this from? Newegg is generally the best US shop afaik.

3. Any reasoning behind the 64-bit?

4. Likewise the LAN card - motherboards now have that all built in.

5. You'll need a power supply - the generic case one will not be any good.

$1600 budget? I believe you could get a much better set up then that. As some have already said SLi is just not worth it, the performance gains are definitely not worth the money.

Here's my thread about a new gaming computer. But I'll update the parts for what I actually got (am getting soon).

A bit over your budget? Well AU prices are about 20% then the US (exchange rate + freight cost etc), which alone cuts it to ~$1715 (but you'll have to check US prices), then drop the expensive case, second HD and if you don't care about wireless get the standard ASUS P5K-E (or even a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R), maybe get a 8800 GTS instead of the GT and the speakers you want. Hopefully it will be in budget.

You can probably save some money if you got rid of the Network: Killer K1 10/100/1000 Gigabit High Speed PCI Network Card.

The built-in LAN card is garbage and uses CPU power to do what it does.  I must admit that the Killer NIC is a little overboard though.  Just get a $10 -50 Intel one and that should do way better than your onboard without being problematic and overly expensive.

$1600 will get you a hella lot more my friend.  since you live in the us, go to newegg.com and make a wishlist or two.  put your items you want in there and compare.  heres an example that i just made.  spend the extra on a 19" widescreen, there cheap nowadays, and then get a cheap operating system.  i'd personally hold off on vista until sp1 as you said you are new to computers and sticking with xp will give you less a headache.  trust me.

without monitor that is, it needs to be 1600 incl. monitor!

Go with drunkens configuration, it'll be arround 1700 US dollars, swap the 22" with a 20" monitor if you're really tight on your 1600 dollar budget.

Drop the NIC card, it's not worth it. Instead get an G92 8800 GTS 512 MB.  Think about getting a 74 gig raptor for your OS and priority games. Up the PSU too. 700 watts at the minimum.

What ']['error listed is perfect. That's an awesome gaming rig and if you decide to go with a G92 GTS, you'll be able to run Crysis (zomg) on very high (DX10) settings. That monitor's pure sex btw. I have it and love it.

I had a bad experience with the p5n-e board(2 of them actually), as I couldn't get it stable. I think there were some other members(Jsnipy) that had problems as well. I would suggest trying another board.

I have a p5n-e board and it took some work to get it running good.  If you want to learn about motherboards/bios go with this board.

My advice go with a P35 and stay away from SLi

Are you in a rush to get this? Wait till start of february to get the new Quad Cores. Cheaper and much better. No point in throwing out cash for the Q6600.

How much better are they going to be? I am not really in a rush just looking to buy very soon.

Not a lot different than what other people are saying but:

1) Lose the Killer NIC.
2) Get a single 8800GTS (Or hell, they are on sale around here for $100, SLI these instead, if you have to SLI something)
3) I personally would go with an EVGA 680i board (Best board I have ever used) or maybe the new EVGA 780i board if money isn't an issue.
4) I personally wouldn't be put off of Vista, though I would not use the 64-bit version. Stick with the 32 bit.

As in like 2x better.

The new one
Core 2 Quad Q9450        2667 MHz    2 × 6144 KiB    1333 MT/s    8x

The old one
Core 2 Quad Q6600                   2400MHz       2x4096KiB            1066MT/s        9x

Basically : Total annihilation.

@HITNRUN

I disagree, if anything 64-bit is the way to go.
64bit = 4GB + of RAM. Much safer bet. Plus, nearly all the niggles are ironed out now and the SP1 is coming out soon enough ( Feb )
