680i?  The 780i really doesn't have any amazing features that the 680i doesn't have, does it?

Heard it had support for the new Penryns or something.  Like I'm going to buy a quad-core any time soon.

If you want the absoloute best, then the 780i is probably it. Depends which one exactly you get, as the features vary.

Remember you get 3 way SLi and PCIE 2.0 as well.

Hmm, PCI-E 2.0 sounds tempting...the 8800GT uses that, doesn't it?  Provides DX10.1 support as well, right?

This mobo is for my cousin, I'm building him a computer.  It's not really necessary to get him a top-of-the-line computer.

Can't find the X48 on Newegg, but I'm looking at the X38...

Edit: Why so many PCI x1 slots and only two regular PCI slots?!
Edit 2: Nvm, I just realized I had a PCI-E 2.0 article I was reading earlier in front of me.    Maximum PC ftw.

Take a look at Asus P5E x38 mobo. It is awsome. I have it and couldn't be happier with it. Pair that with a 9800GX2 and you got awsome rig

Blame Asus for that, apparantly they over stocked on X38 boards, and Intel agreed to hold back.  Looks like late January for a release now.

What do you mean regular PCI slots?  You mean for graphics cards?

I mean for things like sound cards, NIC cards, extra USB header cards, etc.  If I meant PCI x16 I would say it.  I think it's PCI x4?

you really don't need 780i unless you go nuts and buy Quad SLi...

Ok my apologies lol.

What board you looking at?  I think GC_PaNzerFIN suggestion was a really good one.  One of the best boards at the moment and not exactly the most expensive.  Infact am pretty sure it is just a slightly dieted maximus formula eh panzer?  Good board, my vote anyways

yeah. It has the same PCB as Maximus formula. Differences are minimal. There is even text 'Maximus Formula' under the P5E sticker

Would that be this?

Because I'm looking at either that or this?

Two recommendations of the former though, hard to pass up...

The P5E is better than the EVGA nf680i LT. And don't worry not having SLi support. There is no need for that since the age of dual GPU cards has started.

Okay, I'll recommend that to him then.  But SLI support?  I wasn't worried about that; I was worried that 2 PCI x4 ports might be too few...although I could only see him adding a sound card or something.  That reminds me, gotta pick out a sound card too.  5.1.
