Basically, I've had my wonderful nVidia GeForce 7900GT for about 2 years.

This card has done awesome. BF2 all high, BF2142 all high, several racing sims and flight simX prett much all on high.

It's cooled with a fantastic Zalman cooler which brings the temps right down...https://img48.imageshack.us/img48/2649/tempsqp5.png

which is

but, I'm wanting to upgrade. In CoD4 I can just detect that it's not reaching the "smooth" fps mark. Should I wait, or go4it now?

Recommendations would be cool

Just wait a little for the next high-end card (you can wait it out that 7900GT will hold) and then decide again on either buying one of the current top end cards (8800GT,GTX, or GTS 512MB G92) which will have dropped in price or get the new beast that is coming out.. I believe it's the 9800GX2 coming up next.. Depends on what you want to spend... More futureproof is ofcourse with the new cards coming out.

With your card so cold, you can easily overclock it.  Download RivaTuner and play around with it.

It starts to artefact, even though it's at like 40C at load.

So, I'm not going for ultra HD gaming, so not going for any Ultra cards.   I's between a GTX and a GTS. Would I need a GTX for a 22"?

That the default resolution, or are you running lower than the screen's max? LCDs look utter shit with anything but default. If you get a new card, up it to the correct, if it isn't.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

GTS then, IF you upgrade now.  Which, I wouldnt bother with tbh, if u can put up with a less than silky gaming experince for a little while you will defo be thankful for it in the long run.  Or, buy eVGA and use the step up program?

nah it's lower than the native. I do it because the max res. of my monitor is 1680*1050

However, it can only run at 60Hz at that res.  60Hz is horrible on the eyes.
