Yeah, when it comes to middle class we are. But, they have more people and they also have much higher amount of super-rich elite. So that's why as a whole America is still overall much richer.
You also have to factor in that this is GDP / population. The US has far higher income disparity than the UK. This means that the average UK worker has been earning more than the average US worker for ages, it's just that the US has a ludicrously rich top 5% of society that artificially pushes the US values up.
