NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrina's victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering — including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.

The total number — $3,014,170,389,176,410 — is the dollar figure so far sought from some 489,000 claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Of the total number of claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.
Oh my...

*Insert Dr. Evil quote*

I do see their point, but I have to kinda shake my head at people who live below sea level, in a flood plain, and then bitch when the waters inevitable came.

Geez. I wonder if it is too late for us in Oklahoma to sue over bombings, tornadoes, and ice storms...

Nice, hand out again.  Guess they finished using those FEMA debit card for strippers and beer.  These people need to sue the state and city government first if they want to go after government.  Even that would be ridiculous.  No one forced them to stay in an area they were told to leave because it is below sea level with a hurricane bearing down on it.  Is there a number to quantify that stupidity?  I don't think so!

Edit: Notice the people in Mississippi aren't doing this kind of bs.

I don't mind a bit of money going towards them, but this is insane. But I guess this is just showing you how stupidly easy it is to get money through sueing in the USA.

K this is retarded. I would sue the government also. The article say one plaintiff seeks quadrillion then later says the total sum of all complaints is quadrillions. Obviously if it were me I'd make the sum more reasonable.

I know poor black people are supposed to just ride off into the sunset in their SUV's and winebagos off to a campground before the storm hit. Utopia's are nice. Just hope to fucking god you never need help from fema. Then again your perfect.

one person is seeking three quadrillion dollars

and no, pain and suffering isn't worth one billion dollars, nor is the tin shack they lived in.  the volume of bogus claims and shady characters involved in the whole Katrina aftermath are partly to blame for why FEMA is taking so long to sort things out

Well it may have been a tin shack but it was their home.

Tax dollars go from us to the government  to fund fema and tons of other shit no one care to try to list. State of emergency was declared the day prior to the storm besides the reports of the massive storm 4 days prior. If I were a FEMA disaster response coordinator I may have been getting my shit together earlier in the week. Not when there is hundreds of people shitting and pissing inside a convention center for 3 days (of course as  a coordinator myself I have to work for my money). Its flat fucking embarassing the most powerful country in the free world and we help a foreign nation better than we help our own people during disaster.

Katrina was more of a disaster to this administration than the poor planning of Iraq ever will be. Due to the fact that it was Americans that suffered.

Also embarassing is hearing fellow Americans act as if New Orleans was Cuba and the fuckers who stayed got what they deserved. Even so, a stupid American is still an American.

people always complain about small government except when it comes to lawsuits and natural disasters, it seems.

This is wholly ridiculous and is a debasement of all good morals that we should have - money isn't everything, and they've already had a fair bit thrown at them.
Also, is this not what insurance is for, especially in an area liable to flooding? - to cover your loss which will, inevitably (by living in such an area), happen. Can someone qualify with me whether insurance plans to cover such eventuality that eventually happened were available?

And, as a tangent, I can't help but feel this could possible increase racial tensions...

Abolish FEMA and give said tax allocation to the national guard to to do the job. I'd support that.

Also, I'd like to point out this horrifying quotation:

Daniel Becnel, Jr., a lawyer for many of the plaintiffs wrote:

There's no way on earth you can figure it out. The trauma these people have undergone is unlike anything that has occurred in the history of our country.
So, unlike anything in the history of your country, eh, Mr. Becnel? What about The American Civil War, the links to the slave trade et al.?
I find that lawyer wholly bullish and offensive - a complete imbecile if he means it; I just hope he's being much the same as any lawyer and siding blindly with his clients.
