Warner bros announced earlier this week that they will abandon HDDVD for Blu-Ray later this year.

Paramount had a contract via Viacom their owner that committed them to HDDVD but that ended yesterday, they have not announced a format switch.

With Warner being the first to take sides in the format war could this be the death of HDDVD ?

finally, we can buy move players without fear of non-compatability

Good, HDDVD was a bad idea from the start...

I wish they'd figure it out so I could buy a player already!  Oh well, as we wait costs are coming down on them.

It's like VHS vs Beta, except much more expensive!

Actually, I think a video player was more expensive in real terms (at the time they came out). We're spoilt these days.

Iv held back to see who would win, but my money was on blu-ray as it is slightly superior to HD. And most people do not want second best. Iv got sky HD and its cool, just not enough channels at the moment to warrant the fortune it cost me.

I have feared this for a while.

I got a HDDVD player with my HDTV as it came as a deal (otherwise I wouldnt have got one yet). But I have been talking to a lot of people about the fact that because Sony have their mucky hands in a lot of the big budget movies, they are pushing Blu-Ray a lot in advertising, were as HDDVD does not have a real big push with tv adverts.

I had originally thought that there wouldn't be a winner between the two formats as novice users who buy a HDTV would automatically buy a HDDVD player because they would be familiar with the name, and would possibly be unsure as to what a Blu-Ray is and people who buy the 360 would also be buying this format. Also all the PS3 market would buy the Blu-Ray discs as this is what is compatible with their system.

But with Sonys push for blu-ray, and the fact that when you go into music/dvd stores they have a much larger section for blu-ray, I now think that they will win this battle and HDDVD might become a thing of the past.

HD DVD existed for how long? 1? 2 Years top in retail use. I think they have lost. Blu ray holds about twice the data and thats not even double sided.

HD DVD
Media type: High-density optical disc
Encoding: VC-1, H.264, and MPEG-2
Capacity: 15 GB (single layer)
30 GB (dual layer)
51 GB (triple layer) [1]

BLU RAY
Media type: High-density optical disc
Encoding: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), and VC-1
Capacity: 25 GB (single layer), 50 GB (dual layer)

I've just recently bought into the Blu Ray simply because Sony gave me a free PS3 with my HD TV (KDL40V300). The war is not over yet with 2 major studios still HD DVD only but it does look like the writing may be on the wall for HD DVD.

I would expect sales of Playstation 3's to soar.  Why buy a Blu-Ray player when you can have a Playstation & a Blu-Ray player I guess.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Yes, the big problem with Blu Ray is the first set of player were profile 1.0 the newer ones are profile 1.1 with profile 2.0 player due for launch soon. Profile 1.0 players should be able to still play the movie from profile 2 disks but thing like picture in picture and interactive content will not work. So a PS3 is a great way to get into Blu Ray without worrying about all that and it does not take 3 minutes to power up and start to play a disk like the profile 1.0 players.

How did the porn-war go? please correct me if i´m wrong but did´nt Blueray in some way abandon the porn or was it HD exlusive? Beside that feels logic as i´m not have anything to back up with but i was always feeling blueray had better quality with higher costs and that´s why HD came so popular it was cheaper to produce.

The pron war is not sorted but basically Disney refuse to let any plant manufacturing their Blu Ray's manufacture pron. Sony do not ban pron on Blu Ray. Now some non Sony fabs exist pron is possible on Blu Ray with one studio just anonoucing Blu Ray Pron.

These format wars screw over the consumer the most. I only got my PS3 for gaming, and I haven't bought a Blu Ray movie yet. I was waiting before I found out who would come out on top. I don't really buy movies that often, but I guess now Blu Ray movies are more desirable, as it doesn't look like it will go under any more.

I read that Blu-ray has outsold HDDVD 2:1.

Also, The XBox360 is probably getting a Blu-ray player (like the HDDVD player they already have.

I don't really care...

But, blu-ray is better and will win-out, for sure, in the end. I don't really care though. A movie that sucks, in high-def, still sucks. I will probably not buy a single blu-ray DVD movie - for years. All my movies (I don't rent, I always buy or trade DVDs) are standard DVD format, and the experience of good film making is basically never enhanced by high-def (IMO, maybe a good sci-fi flick might get some minimal amount of "ooh that looked cool," but not much else). Good movies are still good on normal DVD and bad movies still suck in high-def.

Meh. That is why I have a computer. No need for stupid compatability issues.

Anyway, Topal is completely correct. A good movie is a good movie. Definition shouldn't make a difference to your enjoyment - unless its a pirated/cam version.

Your right that a bad movie is still bad on any format. HD brings better sound and a clearer sharper picture if you have a large TV. It also address's the issue that films are 24 fps and TV is either 25 PAL or 30 NTSC. Converting the frame rate means that you get jerky panning shots on DVD but this should not be the case if you go HD and you TV supports 24p. The quality increase transition to HD is not as big as it was from VHS to DVD.
