I know this is probably not possible but here goes.

I was burning a cd and installing the newest divx update at the same time last night and my system froze.

I got impatient and after about 10 min, I started to worry about the cd burner over heating or somthing so I
pressed the reset button and turned the power off.

I guess doing those things that close together is what caused it but when i tried to reboot
the system would only load to the "safe mode" choice screen where I could either choose start normally, safe mode, or last known good config ect. and I had no use of the keyboard.

I tried booting from cd and could  only get to the reinstall windows screen, so I chose the RECOVER option from the main windows xp install screen and then found myself staring at a command prompt for the C drive.

I managed to find out by using this command C:/bootcfg /scan
that I had one or more unrecoverable errors in windows.

My system has one hard drive partitioned into 2 pieces C: and F:

I had all my movies/music and tv shows on the F: drive

I was finally able to format my C: drive and get windows reinstalled

When all was said and done and I had all my drivers and stuff back
to my horror when I checked MY COMPUTER the F drive was gone
and it looks like I will have to format it and lose everything.

I need to know if there is anything I can do to recover the lost media files I had and also if you guys could tell me if this type of crash is normal seeing as how I reset and powered down close to the same time?

I feel sick that I lost all my movies and music.

thanx for any info you guys post

thank you for replying, I am pretty sure I lost all that stuff but I will try what you mentioned when I get home from work.

I do have an external HDD but it is full.

I am planning on buying a 500GB external HDD with my tax check.

do you think I caused the crash by pressing reset and powering down at the same time?

Probably not. The buttons are there to use, and you used them, so I doubt it.

Now, the F drive. When I installed some Hardware into my computer both of my DVD drives would not be located, so I posted here and they said to check in the BIOS, I didn't know what I was doing, so I handed over to my brother, and he found that they were set to disabled. So, restart your PC, and go into the BIOS and check if the drive is set to enabled or not.

would there be a separate choice in the BIOS for partitions or would there just be a section for the whole HDD itself

when I look in my disk manager it says that the f: is allocated but not formatted.

does allocated mean it would still have my media on there or does that mean that it is blank and ready to format?

also, what would cause my new system to crash like this to where I lose everything?

The only thing I can think of that I do that might cause this is when I use my external HDD I do not use the safe remove option and I just unplug it but I use an E-SATA cord so I didnt think that mattered.

Once I get all my stuff back I dont wanna lose it again to the same problem so any infoyou guys can give me
as to why this crash happened would be great.
