Anybody who's anyone knows about Tay Zonday. You know, the silly-looking black guy who sang the hit single "Chocolate Rain." Well, in Tay Zonday style, he **moved away from the mic to sell out. To Dr. Pepper. To make a music video promoting their new drink, Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper.
Now then, a few days ago I went to the store to buy some drinks. I noticed Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper sitting there in the fridge. They have two varieties - normal and Diet. Now, I'm not some sort of sissy-boy, but I just don't take stock in drinking 200 calories of potentially nasty soda. The way I see it is if I drink too much normal soda I'll die of heart disease, and if I drink too much diet soda I'll die of artificial-sweetener cancer. Might as well die slim, right?
Anyways, I grab the Diet version and head to the checkout counter. I get in the car and twist off the cap. Immediately, the CO2 gas enters my nostrils, reminding me of the crappy chocolate-flavored fluoride toothpaste that my dentist offers when I get my teeth checked on. I put the drink to my lips and take a sip.
The drink is... interesting to say the least. Now this could be because I had the diet version, but either way it didn't taste normal. If you've ever had an "Andes" chocolate bar, with the cherry filling, you'll know what this tastes like. The drink did not go down as quickly as, say, a Dark Chocolate Peppermint Mocha Frappucino from Starbucks (the ones in the small glass bottles). In fact, I started drinking it around 4PM and didn't finish it till around 630PM (that's 1600 to 1830 for you 24-hour timers). Most sodas I'll drink much faster.
The drink didn't leave bitter tastes, which was good. But it was just... odd. It wasn't bad enough to throw out but not good enough to buy again. Overall, Tay Zonday's attempt to brainwash my mind with repetitive loops and baritone singing was effective... but Dr. Pepper's attempt to get me hooked on their beverage was not.
