Fuck sake. No one can be helpful these days.

I need a new car, but I have very specific guidelines that need to be followed, so lets see if BF2s can help out.

I need a car that can travel long distances with ease. It needs to be able to hold some amount of cargo (I was thinking a hatchback for this),

It needs to be affordable, I can make payments, but I will not buy a $30,000 car.

It needs to be good or great on gas. I can't have something that gets anything less than like 23 to be honest. Considering my working conditions, gas just isn't convenient.

It needs to be able to traverse dirt roads.

It needs to not look like a piece of shit. I'm done with dealing with cars that I don't like. I want a fucking car that I like to drive.

Halp?

New or second hand?

New... good luck.

Second hand:

Magna Wagon, could probably pick a good one up for 10k. (Edit: possibly called the Diamante in the US)

Subaru outback, will be a little more expensive.

EDIT: Or you could try picking up a late 90's BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class wagons (Turbo diesel if at all possible).

New cars are a false economy, just get one second hand that's a year or so old and pay half the price.

Sounds like you want a small truck, something like a Ford Ranger. Not sure if the mpg is good enough though.

Anyway, I know Audi and BMW made a nice Touring (wagon) version. Here is the Audi A6:

https://www.cruisewolf.no/fin96AudiA6Avant18.jpg

^That WILL traverse dirt roads with ease if you get the quattro version. And should get over 25 mpg highway. Model year is between 95-97 I think so you should be able to find one for under $6000

This is the BMW...I think it looks better, and it will be a nicer ride. More comfort and more quite. I've ridden in both. I'd prefer the Audi if you plan to drive in mud/dirt/rain.

Toyota also made a Camry wagon, which the newer models aren't that bad looking, should be able to find one for dirt cheap. ALL of these cars will get you cross country with no problems (Assuming you bought one WITH no problems)

I would second the Outback recommendation.

you could start at a place like this, more specifically here and here.

the dodge caliber offers 4wd, but my boss owned one for 8 months and it sucked ass, he traded last week for a chevy impala.

if you need a car that can handle some of the rougher dirt roads, you may wanna consider something in the crossover class/tiny SUV class.
