Your girlfriend/wife means everything to you, you're completely in love with her.

However, you've done something to really piss her off (doesn't matter what exactly it is you've done) and she's threatening to leave you. Luckily she gives you one more chance and says:

"You have to convince me you REALLY love me, because I don't believe you do anymore"

(no this didn't happen to me, but happened to a friend of mine a couple of years back and we were talking about the best way to handle this situation, earlier tonight.)

So, what would you do if this really happened to you?

Honestly, and I don't mean to sound like a prick, but I would let her leave. Love shouldn't be stipulative to an ultimatum and you certainly can't put a time limit to prove it.

I see what you're saying (forget the time limit, I edited that out) but if it really happened and you really did love her, and you know you've really fucked up...surely you would try and turn the situation around, she has every right to question your devotion.

The key to maintaining love and compassion in a relationship is to do the exact opposite of what your topic insinuates - you don't do something for a girl to prove to her that you love her or care about her, you do stuff for your girl because you care about her. Do stuff for her that she doesn't expect or ask of you. One of the things I do that my girlfriend absolutely loves (and guarantees me loving) is that sometimes I wake up before she goes to work and leave a rose on her windshield, or maybe a card. Sometimes I send her flowers at work - shit like that is really simple but it goes such a long way in a relationship. You are showing that you care without being prompted. Plus it kind of lets her show off to her coworkers - "see, I have someone that really cares about me".

If she drops an ultimatum like that, the relationship is already over.

You know what, we really need to know what happened in a nutshell. If he cheated on her, yeah it's still possible that he loves her, but that is going to be very hard for her to understand. Sometimes us guys just need a change of scenery, a different position. Girls would not understand this though, from my experience.

But he/you shouldn't have to prove everything. If he/you really loved her then there should be no doubt about your love. Actions, words, and a culmination of everything ever done should prove that. Depending on the situation, her making him/you prove love is very messed up.

We really do need to know the situation to establish the legitimacy of the proving so to speak.
