It was a craze started by Jane Fonda a quarter of a century ago and became a lucrative sideline for a succession of stars. Now America's space agency has entered the world of celebrity fitness videos by beaming astronauts' exercise routines back down to Earth.Nasa is broadcasting the workouts of the crew of the international space station, orbiting 220 miles above the planet, in an attempt to encourage the country's overweight to shed some pounds. The agency hopes viewers of its Nasa TV channel will follow the astronauts' lead - without the unique difficulties posed by zero gravity.

"It's all about motivation," said astronaut Clay Anderson, whose workouts strapped to exercise equipment during his five-month spell aboard the space station last year are among those featured. "You have to set a goal, whether it's new clothes, losing 20 pounds or being in good shape when you land on Earth."According to government figures, 57% of adults in the US are overweight and 32.9% are classified as obese. Nasa hopes it can help make an impact on the figures while highlighting the importance of fitness among astronauts, who must withstand the rigours of long space missions and the bone density loss that follows.

I have motivation but I don't have drive. Nothing like going to the gym and being the weakest guy there, or seeing some 400lb behemoth who doesn't look like he even knows what the word "Exercise" means lift a boulder.

Everyone started somewhere.  Instead of seeing yourself as the weakest guy there, look at one of the other guys and say to yourself  'damn, if I work at this that will be me'.

I have my own work-out room across from my room. So, it's no problem. I'm kinda sorta fit.

i've been working out at school for 4 months in gym class... not an intense workout but it's nonetheless lifting weights, doing a proper amount of reps and sets... and I've gotten very few gains both in strength and size. fail.

NASA's internet broadcasts always amuse me. They have all this fancy new electronic technology, and just don't know what to DO with it.

However, they know how to make things properly. The shuttles are still going, the mars rovers have completely failed to fail and are still going years past when they were expected to stall, and their site is VERY snazzy.
I can't help but think that the first men on mars will be called on to brush dust off the rovers, fix a few circuits, and set them on their way again.

Yea, they should broadcast space porn.

Is NASA taking us to the moon so we can do bench press under lower gravity?

If you're lifting right that shouldn't be the case. Or you're workout plan is useless. Fewer reps with higher weight is a best for increasing strength. Find a weight you can do around 8 reps max.
