Well, I got CoD4 for Christmas and its a good game. But, thats not my problem.

It seems to be...In lamest terms, un-smooth. Its not really laggy, per-say, atleast not the way lagg is in BF. It's just....un-smooth.

Is there anyway to fix it? I have 1 Gb of Ram but I keep the performance monitor up on my keyboard so I can monitor it and it usually only uses around 88%-95% (which I think is fine and won't be the problem). I turned down the graphical settings a bit and that seemed to help a bit so I'm thinking its a video card thing. Maybe, is it just sheer processor speed? My computer is a little bit old so it's only at like 2.2 Ghz or something close to that. Or, is it just a matter of using the right combo of settings? I'm also maybe thinking of getting a new computer with 2.4 Ghz, 2 Gb, and an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB.

All help/ideas are appreciated.

I get horrible lag too.

1gb ram, 2.7ghz, and an ancient 9600pro.

While were on this topic, I also have one other question. Exactly how good is an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB?

What is your current video card?  Use the /drawfps 1 command to see your FPS in game.  If it's below 30, that's why you're seeing lag.

I think any more you should always be playing with 2GB of ram.

It's a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT but the only thing making me think that it isn't the video card is that I can run every Battlefield on all high settings perfectly. Give me one second to start up CoD4 and check the fps. If I do have low fps is that the video card the reason?

Speak of the devil. I went my parent's house this weekend and they had gotten an XPS 420 PC which has a "128MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO"  (and a Q6600 proc)in it. It runs games, but Team Fortress 2 ran sub par IMO (30 or less fps at 1680x???), with a bunch of stuff turned down.

The command for FPS doesn't seem to be working. I just put "/drawfps 1" into the console and that's it, right? Were does it show up?

The 7300GT is poor card for gaming. I would assume graphic lag is your problem.

try using the console command

/maxfps 200

Agreed, I cant beleive you run BF2 maxed on on that, I cant do it with my 7600GT with out knocking my fps down a whole bunch.  Try lowering your settings in COD4, your trying to get performence out of a card thats not designed for gaming.  Ram also makes quite a bit of difference, 2gb of it will increase your performence, atleast it did with me and BF2.

I'm about to go to bed for the night, but theres still some things that need answering.

  • What can I do to fix my problem?
  • How good is the ATI Radeon card I put up?
  • What is the command to show FPS in CoD4 and where does it show up?

Lower graphics settings, buy a new card, more RAM would most likely help as well.

How much is your budget for a newer card?

You could always download fraps to see FPS.

BF2 is smooth but CoD4 isn't???

My specs:
E6600
8800GTX
2GB

I run BF2 with average 50 fps with everything maxed out, 4xAA, and it's INCREDIBLY stuttering, not FPS drop, it just STUTTERS.

I run CoD4 maxed out with average 70 FPS and no stuttering at all, always 100% completely smooth. I've never had a moment of lag in CoD4, it's so freaking insanely well optimized.

In my case it depends on the map and server I am playing on.
I have my resolution set to 1280x768 (15:9 aspect) and I correct it using the widescreen fix.
I run a ATi 2600HD PRO (Or actually, the faster XT, but Apple screwed the naming up) with 4Gb rams.

Buy a new GFX card ! (even my 7900GTO 512mb is fighting on medium-high settings) and tbh, 7300 is a LOW end card not made for gaming...

xBlackPantherx wrote:

I don't know anything about ATi cards but check www.tomshardware.com 's 2007 GPU board for a comparison !

xBlackPantherx wrote:

/cg_drawfps 1 or /cg_showfps 1   (remember the /)

And btw: You really can't compare BF2 with COD4 because there are 3 years between them....

Yesterday I've played after a long time CoD2, it runs with all maxed out with about 60 fps.

If you put the renderer from DX9 to DX 7 it runs with 125 fps, everytime, looks like crap but it runs smooth.

Why can't CoD4 be like that?

Compare:

DX9 average fps: 50 - 70

DX7 average fps: 125

This game is so much smoother than BF2. I have a good computer and with anything over 100 ping in BF2 and you can forget about IO. In COD4 i play on a american server with 180 ping and its super smooth. Never had any lag ever.

The problem is like you say your computer is old, it just cant run it right. There is some cheap ram available now so for sure get 2 gigs. Then what ever else you can afford, may be a card. But i personaly think ATI are shit.

Latency has NOTHING to do with your computer's performance.

20 ms or 300 ms, you still get the same FPS.
