Well, I just wonder, how much and what do you read (USA, UK, GER - especially interested). The point is that my primary subject at the University is the English language and literature (American too of course) and secondary is German (but I will have to read something anyway)
We study your well-known literature thoroughly, reading some old stuff (Sagas, myths etc.) in translation, but starting from 19th century -mostly in the original.

However, I want to read some modern books that are popular with and appreciated by the educated young people (that are you). Why? Because the outstanding (and a very few of them) books of today will be included in our course in 4-6 years, so I will miss them! I'm waiting for your recommendations, please write title, author, language and what it is about. Thanks!

And no lolz that this is posted on BF2 forum. It's just my choice

Sure, but probably not the Vonnegutt you haven't heard of - Welcome to the Monkey House (short stories for reading on the can) or a the weirdest book I've read...ever...Breakfast of Champions.

U can try Naked Lunch (Burroughs) too if you like the bizzarre.

I saw Crichton in the list - I thought you wanted stuff a little more literature / a little less contrived.

If you go that route - try Elmore Leonard (movies: Get Shorty, 52 Pickup, Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, and about 30 more).

I also like John Katzenbach (re: Movie Hart's War).

If you like funny purposeless books: Tim Dorsey - featuring a psychotic guy named Serge who kills people at random (for instance, duct taping a guy to a chair, attaching a water weasel to a fire hose, and letting the guy get beaten to a pulp).

Nice review, thank you! You see, I want to explore both entertaining and serious literature. It is part of my profession and it is interesting

Been reading some books by Donna Leon, a police commisionair from Venice in Italy - the books are very well written, most of it written from the lead characters point of view, it descibes the little things around him so you really catch the atmosphere of Venice and the people living in northern parts of Italy.

The plots are great and the lead character Commisario Brunetti is one of the more intelligently written characters in a long time, 7 or 8 eight books in the series ...

I'm sure it comes in most European languages ...

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, it's in English, as for what it's about, well, i can't really explain without giving away too much. There are some people i know that hated this book, personally, i enjoyed reading it. It is one of my favorite books.
