Here in Soviet Norway, there is pretty much only 1 company you can get internets from, and their biggest package is 6mb.
Here in my local market Verizon is buying the cable companies. It's a no brainier, even on the lower connections. Do you get fios TV as well?killer21 wrote:

Yes. I got the entire package for a meager 99.99 per month. Can't beat that deal. The only thing I don't like about FiOS TV is the fact that Verizon does not have a deal in place with MLB or DirectTV to broadcast the MLB package. I live in MD and am a Braves fan. That is probably the only thing I liked about Comcast. Other than that, I love the HD DVR.Kmarion wrote:

I would get it as well but for some reason my homeowners association has a deal worked out with both Verizon and the cable company (I'm sure they are giving them breaks for mass signups). They pay for part of my cable bill through Brighthouse and they pay for part of my Internet through Verizon. It's over $100 a month in savings so I'm not going to screw that up. I have an HD DVR as well and I just added an expander. So now I am recording all of my movies in HD .killer21 wrote:

if so, is there any quality loss at all?
I may have to look into that expander since I record just about everything I watch in HD.Kmarion wrote:

Aries came real close though.
Edit: And I tried it again for kicks and managed to beat my old d/l time by a little bit, and about double the upload.

No I have all the HD channels. I think there is like 40 or so for me. A blue ray sized movie would chew up the space in no time. Broadcast signals are much smaller than 1080p. The expander says it can record up to 60 hours. But I think it's a lot more than that. When it's combined with my DVR storage I get almost 1gig per movie. Specifically I have 11 full length movies stored in HD and I have used 13 percent. I'm not sure as to the format it saves it in.Jenspm wrote:

Also be aware that if you take the external dvr drive and disconnect it from the DVR you have to format it before it can be used again. You loses everything you saved. I am going to see if there is a way around it (Hax tbh). I should probably try that before I fill it up .

Considering that you're on a college network, what kind of limitations do you have on your network? I know it used to be torrents, but some places have been getting really aggressive and are turning to deep packet inspection and the likes.mtb0minime wrote:

i have comcast it sucks so mad i had to go to my grandparents house and use their dsl and im canceling my comcast internet i hate it!
I haven't experienced any limitations yet, but then again, I download things very little to none. And I'm not sure if it's 100% effective or not, but I also use forced encryption on uTorrent.mikkel wrote:

Couple years ago one of my roommates got a few e-mails from Fox and NBC telling him to stop downloading torrents. I don't know what program he was using. But of course, he was downloading massive amounts of stuff, so they'd be more inclined to go after him.
DC++ is where it's at. That's where you can truly take advantage of a fast network if someone in the area sets up a hub. My first year here someone had a hub and it was awesome. If I was bored one night, I'd browse around and "rent" a movie (i.e. download it in less than a minute) or check out some music. Unfortunately the guy who had the hub graduated and as far as I know, no one else has set another one up (and I don't want or care to do it myself).
Upgraded the line to ADSL2+? TPG did that, now I have ADSL2+ enabled but no modem to use itsome_random_panda wrote:

I get that too.. I know I have an upload speed of 15 megs but sometimes it says 3 to 4 mbps. The majority of the time, however, I do get the actual 15 mbps.Kmarion wrote:
