On my mom's MacBook, she downloaded a big file at around 1.4MBps (the advertised speed for my internet service). On my computer, I am downloading a different file (both from Apple's website) at... 70KBps. Her computer is close to the router, full signal strength. Mine is a bit far, the signal has to pass through walls, and I get 1-2 bars on my signal strength.

Would a poor wireless signal affect my DL speeds? If so, those powerline networking adapters are looking attractive...

yes they do, with one or two bar you won't get a lot of speed out of it
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

yeah... speeds will degrade depending on conditions... distance... walls...interference... 
you could try an experiment and move your computer closer to the router and see?

another variable is the computer system itself... are your computers the same specs?

From my experience, I believe that 1-2 bars of signal strength can affect download speeds, but anything higher than that won't. On windows signal strength is out of five bars. So 1-2/5 might mess things up.

Makes it have faster internet, a stronger signal strength, longer range, and gives your router a custom touch.

Can't as far as I nkow, my router doesn't support custom firmware.
