ok, im kinda embarresed to admit it, but right now i have 512Mb of ram. yes yes i kno, thats horrible. but i am getting a new 1 gig stick of ram and was wondering on average how much of a performace gain i would get. how much of a performace gain would i get if i got 2 gigs in my system?

Specs:

Intel P4 2.8ghz with HT

Ati Radeon 9600PRO 256Mb O/C'd

Maxtor 160 gig HD

and of course, 512mb ram.

2GB = no start game lag, faster load times, minimize and resize game in seconds.

i have a 2.6 ghz processor, 1 gb of ram, 360 gb hard drive, and a 256mb graphics card and the 1 GB RAM, although more is better obviously, you will notice a difference. I started out with 512 and you will notice in regular game load up from map to map and stuff it will be quicker.  For the people out there who have rediculous computers, they wont notice nor will they know what they are talkin about but i have been there....you will notice a difference. As far as physical numbers....im not much of a copmuter geek, i kinda just play the game....so i cant really help ya on that....sorry

2 gigs would be an astronimical gain, your ram looksto be the bottleneck of your system, the more ram the less work the HD will have to do, as the ram will keep all the information in it. I run 2 1gig sticks of corsair value ram and my machines load times blow most peoples out of the water.

My Setup:
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 FX-53 @ 2.4gGhz
2x EVGA 7800GT CO's SLI
2x Maxtor 160GB PATA HD, Mirrored
2x Corsair 1028Mb Value Ram

I should have 2 more sticks for the 4Gb or maybe 4 sticks of 512 for 2Gb, the more paired sticks the better.

4x 256Mb > 2x 512Mb
4x 512Mb > 2x 1Gb
4x 1Gb > Anything on the market

So adding a 1Gb card to your system, (is it 2x 256Mb or 1x 512Mb?) wont let the new card work as well as it would having it paired with anouther its own size.

The ram/HDDs are going to be your determining factor for load times, you should always pair your ram to get the most out of if (Dual Channel). Do you experience choppyness in games or just slow loading?

Edit: Your the new guy right?

So to clarify, you're replacing the 512 or adding a stick so u would have 1.5Gb total? If your adding the 1 Gb crad go for it, however if your going to replace it you might just wanna go for a second 512 card, if you have an open slot (which it sounds like you do), as the performance of the 2 would be better then the single 1Gb dimm.

i was going to just replace the 512 stick with a 1 gig, then stick the 512 in my other computer, but i guess i'll just buy another 512 stick for the performance. thanks!

I originally had 512 with the same problems as you.
Moved up to 1GB and got much better performance in game, but still longish load times.
I have 1.5 GB now and it's made a huge improvement in load times, swapping out of the game etc.

I'd definately recommend 1.5 or higher....

Anyone remember the good old days when 64k for a game was plenty?
