Question regarding Windows XP and ram.

As many of you know I got a 2007 ALU iMac (2.8ghz model). And I use bootcamp to run XP, which in turn, allows me to run my games.
Yesterday I noticed that my actual RAM count is only 2Gb! When I have a full 4Gb under Mac OS X.

Is this due to Windows incapability to read beyond 2048 Mb's of RAM? Or is there a setting somewhere I need to enable?

mine see 3.5 G but it's PC....
if I instal the 64 bit edition of windows it see the full 4G

Edit:
OH...under PC, the 0.5 G that you don't see is for your PCI slots and peripherals...
Since Mac Emulate XP...I would think it might use more!!!

Nothing to do with Windows, it's because it's a 32bit OS. Whatever version of OSX you're running must be 64bit. You should get more than 2Gb showing up though, most people get somewhere between 2.5Gb and 3.5Gb.

32 bit = max 3.5 Gb ram

64 bit = alot of ram goodness (followed by tons of bugs and incompatibility errors)

Well OS X 10.5 is 64-bit, and in term support 32Gb of RAM (Mac Pro FTW!). I am stunned by the fact that XP fucks me over out of my extra 2Gb. I'll have a closer look into it tonight.

Its not XP, its your hardware. I have 4gb, albeit 3.25 show as available but certainly more than 2.

To the OP: I don't know why that could be happening. There is a maximum of 4GB of addressable space in a standard 32bit operating system, and various bits of hardware (Video cards, PCI bus, etc...) can lower that number that is available to RAM. Apparently, yours is a common problem.

Get XP 64bit if it bothers you so much. As JS said, I think it's your hardware, something extra should be showing up.

sorry to interrupt, i have a similar question, if 32 bit XP doesn't support/show/address (whichever is correct), would it still be possible to run all 4 sticks in dual channel mode?

It is possible to have it show up the full 4Gb on a 32bit OS, however you need to disable the PAE extension, and apparently this isn't a good idea.

I posted those links to show that his problem is a common one with Mac Book Pro owners and more than 2GB of RAM.

It can theoretically support 4GB of RAM. That has been said many times. But other devices can usurp some of the address space that would go to the higher numbers of RAM. Physical Address Extension can allow more than 4GB of RAM to be addressed.

Exactly. 32-bit OS usually addresses 2.5-3.5GB of RAM. In this case it's because of the mac hardware that it only reads 2GB. To get all 4GB show up, upgrade to 64-bit XP or 64-bit Vista.

I have 32 bit XP 2005 Media Centre Edition and 4 gig of RAM its odd cuz i hear all the stuff about it reading 2.5-2.5.... but mine reads 3.8 GB of the 4GB.. anyone got an explaination?
