After reaching Level 55 and playing quite a bit more COD4, I've devised a way of not getting killed by the chopper.
If you hear the guy say "Enemy chopper inbound" (Can't remember when he says this and when he doesn't) run into a building/under cover and camp. If you wish to move, the chopper will fire a load of rounds, then stop, even if there's nobody to aim at. Then the chopper will fire a missile which doesn't normally hit anything. Then it will pause for maybe a second or two, then fire the cannon again.
By timing your runs you can move between cover when the chopper isn't firing, and survive.
