Was wondering if I could find some other people interested in a 1 death, 1 round match.  I've been playing this game for over 400 hours, and I truly love it.  I like the tactics of the game as much as the skill - but I've been thinking about how the tactics would change if your life was worth more than a 15 second delay.

I admit to Jihaad jeeping for my explosive badge even when I know in many situations I'm not gonna bail in time, and doing other crazy maneuvers for a flag defend or grudge kill - knowing that all its gonna cost me in a respawn.  I've even committed suicide to take tactical advantage of a well placed squad leader.

A 1-life per round would truly throw emphasis on squad play, commander skills, and medic value.

Now, I don't expect EA to throw this mod into their service configuration system anytime soon - so it would require player buy-in and an admin that will punkbust violaters.

Anyone else find this scenario appearing as a change of pace?

those would be very short rounds.

They would be very fun rounds though.  Imagine a team that finally works together!  Your skill would have to be better than the other teams to win this. Great idea.

I think it'd be interesting, though I think it would exist better as a mod or something for private servers. It will most definately not be seen on ranked servers, unless a seperate tier of ranking were to be created.

Yeah, imagine that.  Medics needing to revive/heal people to win a round.

I'm sure the scores would be low as well, for the most part, on a 64-man map - you only have 32 people to shoot.  Barring an uber medic, thats only 64 combat points to go around..

But points aren't the idea - neither really is length of play - although, as I sit and type - I do see how a round can go quite long when it's down to two snipers running around Mashtuur city gunning for each other... personally, I can't think of a better reason for a knife fight.

For the record, lets take a hypothetical leap and say that a server out there exists that provides this environment.  I sure as hell wouldn't play it the majority of the time - I like my shiny stuff and get an adrenaline rush from a good, intense, vanilla BF2 game.

CS has no tactics, no big maps. It's just "Who's fastest on the AWP?"

interesting idea...but i think that you would find that people would gravitate towards sniper role or assualt.  i think that it would be better served to make a death limit of around 5 per round.  this would allow for some mistake and some luck to take its place in the game.  i do agree with cow it would be better as a server mod...

edit [i disagree with skruples...they may not be short rounds because people would be more guarded about advancing without protection from squads...which would probably end with everyone playing as a medic to extend the length of 'life' from squad mates]

Sounds like a good idea. I would suggest modifying it from one life per round to a limit of lives per round. Say for instance there are 300 tickets per side and 30 people on each team, that means each member of the team gets 10 lives. Granted that seems like quite a few lives, but I was using that for ease of math. That way each life still counts, but it saves you from running down a hill, falling, dying and effectively ending the round for yourself.

All the other points would more or less remain valid though - no more dropping c4 at your feet to kill yourself, a teamate and one guy like I see done way too often.

NO!!! Horrible idea!

They have this in America's Army. Once you die, that's it for the round. It is EXTREMELY boring if you die right off the bat, whether it be falling off a bridge accidently or some nub TKing you, it sucks! I definitly don't want to sit threw an hour of gameplay watching other players.. screw that.

Sounds boring man, would be even worse than games like CS:S. If you die early, say by accidental vehicle TK, you could be looking at a 10 minute wait until you get to play again. Then if you get killed early again, you just got to play a whopping 2 minutes out of the last 20. WOW that sounds like a lot of fun!!! You can play like that as much as you want with your buddies, but I have no idea why you would want to do something so ridiculous.

Threadstarter, you should SERIOUSLY look into America's Army: it's a 1 death game, and it makes for some great tactical play. Other than that, it is more realistic than BF2 (M203 takes a rather generous range to get armed, nades can be cooked, ...). Combat lifesavers become true LIFESAVERS in this style of play. Furthermore, it has an online ranking and stats system which seems to be where BF2 got a lot of inspiration (www.aaotracker.com)

BF2 is aimed at more "fun" type gameplay, whereas AA:O is a real treat for people looking for the kind of gameplay you describe.

Best of all: it is 100% free (check out www.aaotracker.com and www.americasarmy.com) for more info.

I do not work for these people, and do not want to lure people away from BF2, but I have spent quite a few hours on this fine game, precisely for the reasons mentioned above.

Hooah!
