So we all know nVidia is uber pwning the video card market at the moment, but looking at ATI's stuff it seems the have lower prices, GDDR4 memory, including a higher memory interface (in some, not all), etc.

I understand they are still beat in benchmarks which is what it ultimatly comes down to, but why are they doing so poorly even when their cards aren't that much worse than nVidias?

And my ultimate question: What's good, or even, what's better about ATI than nVidia?

ATi is more HD/movie based while Nvidia is more HD/gamer based so its raw power(Nvidia) vs high definition(ATi).

I say for High end nVidia wins, but for mid-range Ati's HD3850 is win.

Pricewise Ati win.

From my personal experience, they're far better with the source engine (load faster and better framerate than nvidia equivalent). They also have a lower performance impact from anti-aliasing. That's about it.

ATI has also been known to have better image quality in the past (don't know about the current series)

I like ATI, but I really dont give a shit if they use GDDR4. Quite frankly, I dont care if their products are literally made out of shit, as long as they perform well, I dont care what theyre made of. For all I care, the core clock could be 36GHZ but I dont give a damn if it sucks.

I like ATi because of the prices. I'm not made of cash and I can't afford to build high-end systems. But the HD 3850 is amazing and is great for my setup, as well as being $100 cheaper. Besides, I don't play on a massive monitor (I have 19"), and according to Tom's Hardware, the 3850 can keep up with the big boys at a 1280x1024 resolution, so why bother paying more?

I'm very happy with this, and by next year (or maybe even this summer), I'd like to upgrade the mobo (to get multiple PCI-e 2.0 slots) and put another 3850 in here.

And maybe some day in the distant future I'll be able to afford an HDTV to take full advantage of the card (esp. since broadcasting is going into HD only very soon).

I have had an ATI card for 4 years... no issues...

most of the performance market is based on hype and misinformation... 1 kid gets a card and
posts how he gets 300fps on all high settings... and then someone else posts that the 300fps card is only good for video editing...
and the official reviews on websites say that card A blows the doors off of card B... and you look at the charts and its only by 3-5 fps on 1900x1200 lol...   So everyone starts saying how card A is leet sauce lol...

The best way to pick a part for a computer is to find someone or several people you trust and see how they like the product...

with that being a said... a friend who does work for Nvidia is sending me one of his extra 8800gtxs... I hear it pwns leet sauce...lol

not a fanboy for any brand.... I just pick the part that gets it done...

QFT there.

If I was building a media PC for HD movies and stuff, I'd def go with ATi.

ATi's always been there for the convenience side of things (they made one that had a built in TV tuner)

Better picture quality. I got 2  3870s and i really like them a lot in my system.

I think stating "picture quality" is purely subjective (i own both, and the ATi card does not look any better)

Definately ATi can win on price in some cases. A compariosn really has to occur at a given price point.

I wouldn't, since I'd like a linux distro on such computer, and Ati drivers on linux are what they are.

while it is mostly subjective, If you read around enough I know ATI (at least up until the current cards which i'm not sure of) has always been said to have a better "picture quality".  Not saying it's like the difference between high and low settings but there was a better picture.

But the reason i've always used ATI is they were the best bang for the buck in my price range at the time of purchase.

Agreed. think the 2900xt was the exception come to think of it.

But yeah, they did seem to deliver a clearer picture.

Let's not forget that it was only recently that Nvidia became better.  ATI always had better framerates and much better image quality.  Nvidia's partial precision is extremely noticeable to me.

Maybe we can blame ATI's recent failures on AMD.

especially in Crysis. I'll probably get a nvidia 8800GTS 512MB really soon so I know more after that. I currently have a HD 3870.
